Why a Single-Cost ADSL service?

This also allows for very little innovation in the market, new fixed line technologies such as fibre to the home or PLC cannot be implemented as the ISP does not have any rights to install the infrastructure.

Telkom abused its position as infrastructure supplier to sell its ISP accounts the last time I ordered an ADSL line.

The operators placed pressure on me to order Telkom's DSL ISP products with hits that if things go wrong and I use another ISP Telkom won't be able to service the issue.

Maybe the've changed their ways.

It is amazing that in spite of this the independent ISP ADSL resellers seems to thrive.

We have experienced Telkom doing this.

A client of ours called Telkom to find out how far there ADSL line installation was and the Telkom rep turned around and said why are you using Wireless Dimensions as an ISP, you should use TelkomInternet...

Telkom coersion

If you are confronted by attempts by Telkom to coerce you into using Telkom Internet, one route may be to approach ISPA with this information, as it could potentially be added as evidence in one of ISPA's complaints against Telkom.

Also, Telkom's contention that it would be illegal for ISPs to resell the ADSL
portion flies in the face of the wholesale agreements, which Telkom has signed with a number of large ISPs. Under these agreements, the ISPs concerned are purchasing Diginet lines on a wholesale basis, and reselling these to customers.

Even the playing fields

There needs to be some sort of new approach to this area. A solution like allowing all ISP's who supply ADSL to charge the access portion and have access to the DSLAMS, they can then pay a fee to Telkom for use of the DSLAM which in effect would be the line rental we all pay for ADSL. This way it puts ISP's in a much stronger position to supply a tailored package to the user with ONE single charge. Obvisouly there would be legal implications such as VOIP not being enabled on these lines etc because that in effect would enable an ISP to supply Telecoms. I just hope that Line Rentals can be srcapped all together, although this would take some serious legislation and rethinking on Governments behalf, no-one else.

does it matter whether you pay R50 to person A and R50 to person B or R100 to person A and nothing to person B? isnt the point the R100 ?

The point is who delivers the service:

At present Telkom blames the ISP (if you don't use TelkomSA.net) and the ISP blames Telkom.

If you pay a single single a single amount, there is only one place to blame.

It does matter because you then don't have to do business with Telkom.

They have no focus.

They sell dial-up, ISDN, ADSL, Surfmore, Closer etc and now want wireless, wifi, wimax,TriplePlay...and the list goes on and on.Their wonderful diversity of packages will be their downfall.

The only good thing to come from them in a decade of internet mucking about is infinitcall for dial-up users.

Any company that has no focussed service or core product has no future.

When the market is flung open (prolly 20 yrs from now). Along will come one chap with one basic consumer centric/friendly service for the masses and take all their old suckered loyal captive client base.

Really???

There used to be a single charge for a local call, regardless of the length of the call.... until the internet came along, and Telkom realised just how much they could milk us and so began metering local calls.

I reckon if a competitor can match most services, heck even offer perhaps better service thru different access mthods etc but enough to cover all needs they serve/multi companies for different things and at a substantially lower price Telkom will crumble due to the fact that the way they stay competitive right now is to shift/pass the buck onto another product. If you have competition at all angles their investors will cry when profits plumet. But since everyone wants a BIG piece of the now dry and hardening cake it will never happen.
