Expensive HDMI cables are a rip-off and offer no difference in picture quality over cheap ones. So when a salesman tries to up-sell, politely tell him he's wrong and move on with the sale.

Interesting read, I bought a slightly more expensive one (R100) just because the build quality was better and is more durable.

Some of the cables (not necessarily the cheaper ones) have a poor build quality - the connectors at each end come apart easily. I've already had to throw 2 HDMI cables because of this. One of them was an Ellies cable bought from game for R150.

Even if they are of poor build quality it should never get to that. Do you constantly connect and disconnect your cables?

I must be honest, I did not read the article... From experience, I disagree that all HDMi cables are the same. Some cheaper ones cause endless issues when using HDMi over CAT6 extenders, HDMi splitters and HDMi matrix switches. However, you do not have to spend a small fortune to buy a good HDMi cable.

While plugged in at both ends with no stress on the cable? Do they spontaneously disassemble?

Bottom line
OK, so not all HDMI cables are literally the same. Different manufacturing quality can have a slight affect on the ability to transmit the signal over long distances (50+ feet).
From the article.

Bottom line of the article is that the cable cannot affect the quality of the picture, the pixels will look the same no matter what quality cable you use. Same goes for audio, the audio is either perfectly like it should be or it's off. There are no in-betweens.

One of the comments.

I'm sorry Cnet but this is a complete FAIL, if a customer purchases a large 157cm LCD and they use a AKAI cheap HDMI cable do you know what happens? No? I will tell you.

The AKAI cable is cheap because the cable is useless. The cable heats up and starts to glow red hot.

So telling users there is no difference and move on is basically telling people its okay to use cheap cables and dont mention what they will do. So if your house burns down who do they blame, they blame YOU, Cnet!!!

LOL this so made my day!

I would beg to differ if we are comparing cheap 'n nasty vs medium priced cables as there really is a big difference as it will be down to build quality and version type (very very important). But when you try and justify an HDMI cable that cost a small African countries GDP, then its all snake oil.
