Well if you don't feel like following the /. link, you can read https://www.mylookout.com/resources/reports/state-of-mobile-security-2012

And Lookout prime AV is targeted at Android hence the claim.

OMW Guess I forgot why I dont post here.

Thanx for reminding me, I'll leave you people be then.

It's interesting and thanks for the full link but..

Look in their methodology:
To estimate the overall financial impact of malware, Lookout used detection data gathered from Lookout’s global user base along with Android user estimates based on Canalys data 2012 (the Global Smartphone Installed Base Forecasts, June, 2012 Report) to infer broader rates of user infection.

And again in the text leading up to the image:
As noted in Section 2, Methodology, our method of calculating application-based likelihood has significantly changed from previous years and thus should not be compared year over year.

The likelihood that a given device contains malware or spyware is heavily dependent on geographic location, varying from .04% in Japan to 41.6% in Russia. This provides the closest proxy currently available for the current global percentage of devices affected by malicious application-based threats.

So it is not just Android, they talk about iOS and other platforms as well... Hence the accurate Trololololol responses you have received.

This is the same reason Windows suck :)

If you don't pay attention to what you install.... well, you know the rest

We welcome discussions here, but thats the key word - discussions. Look at the title of this thread and your first post, and tell me what discussion should take place following that.

Do you expect us to say, ee gads AlphaJohn, you are right, Android is terrible! Just look at that great informative source you posted!

Dont assert something like that without backing it up. If you do, expect to get flamed.

EDIT: Had you posted the link you just did, we would have had something to go on. A map like that, with no source or reference, is completely useless, which is why you got flamed. Doesnt sound like many people know who or what mylookout even is.

+1 Lookout works on the iPhone platform as well as far as I know.

Well I can go more in depth, for example, if you read the actual report and get to the OS sections https://www.mylookout.com/resources/reports/state-of-mobile-security-2012#updates

You will find that Android is really laging, esp when it comes to ASLR & DEP support as seen in this repport https://blog.duosecurity.com/2012/02/a-look-at-aslr-in-android-ice-cream-sandwich-4-0/

Yes iOS do suffer from some security issues but as this report(PDF) from Apple shows, the OS is much better at limiting malware than the competition

TL;DR: Android can like to have more power, but it comes at a price.

I suppose this is my next response as Android fan to an assumed iOS fan?? :p

On a serious note, Android will have a higher infection rate based solely on how easy it is to get and install an app. It is not locked down like iOS.

It common sense that malware etc. are targeted at OSs that have the biggest market. Hence Windows and Android getting all the infections. Do you really think Malware cannot run on iOS? Most corporations run Windows so why would someone make malicious software for OSX if the reward would be bigger on the Windows platform? Sorry to stray off subject a bit.

I couldn't afford an iphone and I didn't want a blackberry... sooOoo

So you when with a cheap android, cause top end droids are more than iphones. Isnt it great that android also works on cheap phones otherwise you would be stuck with a blackberry :D
