Why are the linux ones so terrible?
For the same reason most linux open source software is so terrible. Too many cooks, and most of them start out as, or evolve into a copy of some commercial ap. Like Gnome.
Now, back to your need, I have been using Azureus (now called Vuze) for years and have not had any issues. It's available on Windows, Linux and OS X and seems to have version/feature/performance parity on all platforms. The new (Vuze) interfaces is truly the work of the devil, but you can still enable the classic interface.
