Why are Linux bittorrent applications so terrible?

If its the default one that comes with Ubuntu (transmission), or the one that comes with Kubuntu (ktorrents)... no matter what. My torrents often stall. On the same network, and on the same machine.. if I run utorrent, the torrent comes flying down.

Why are the linux ones so terrible? You think this would be a place they would perform better.

I found that I had to perform some tweaking on Transmission's default config before I got it working properly. I can't remember what those tweaks were, unfortunately, but Google should have the answers you need.

utorrent runs 100% on wine, so Ill rather use something that works. Couldnt be bothered to put effort into a torrent client.

I use Transmission quite a bit (on Buntu Karmic :) ) and it seems ok for me, are you fully updated Wiz? Might be something silly like that?

Its happened to me almost all my linux life. The linux clients often stall. I am running Natty Kubuntu atm, but the same was happening on Natty Ubuntu, Lynx Ubuntu, Karmic etc. Its being happening to me since the days of Dapper. This is on different machines, different networks, different everything... except the same software. Like for instance I get a stall on this torrent using IS`s uncapped:

It doesnt happen to all torrents, but I get it often. Not just on Transmission, on other linux torrent clients as well.

You sure the difference isn't just firewall settings?

I find it unlikely that different torrent client would provide inherent different result.

Strange, must be you then wiz, have you considered wearing a shiny tin foil suit to stop your body energy interfering with the linux gui? :D

I guess you'll have to take Messuga's advice and try tweaking the config a bit, utorrent sounds nice in wine but that's just defeating the purpose of running linux :whistling:

I actually run both KTorrent and uTorrent (under Wine) on the same PC (Fedora 14 x86-64). Often even at the same time, but using different ports. Sounds weird, but I have different seeding rules for each. Just makes life simpler. Anyhow, I used to find uTorrent better than Ktorrent, but in my opinion, Ktorrent is now quite acceptable. I DO tune it though - changing the settings makes a LOT of difference. Ktorrent has a wizard to assist you, although I increase my number of seeds afterwards. After it's been running for a week or three, Ktorrent does appear to stall. If I stop it and restart it, it then picks up quite happily. But then, I find that uTorrent does the same thing ...

Try out qBittorrent, it works brilliantly. I've tried dozens of different torrent clients and this one stands out. I'm also a big uTorrent fan and this is the closest I could get in Linux. :)

I was a deluge fan at one point, but I changed back to Ktorrent because (at the time - not sure about now) it didn't support RSS feeds. Ktorrent's RSS feeds are a bit clunky compared to uTorrent, but I got them working nicely. So now my episodes come down without my having to do much!

Got no problems with Transmission but then again my experience with the world of Torrents is very noob - think I've done 6 torrents in 7yrs

Yeah, lately I have discovered the joys of Usenet. For a small fee I get most of what I want a LOT faster than the Torrents come down. I still use the Torrents when a thread fails, though.

I've been using Transmission on Fedora for years with no problems except during my short lived foray into the uncapped world.

when i was a torrent user with mweb, deluge worked as well as utorrent under windows.

i would have to suspect setup issues. i can't remember linux torrenting being worse than on windows. and there was a time i would download to a ntfs partition so that whether i was in windows or linux i could continue with my downloads.
