I have played on the real wow and i average between 700-1000ms latency which is very difficult to play with.
I have also tried a private server with lots of people on it and it is also hosted in same country as the real server i tested and i average 350ms, does everyone have this problem?

whos your ISP ?

are you shaped or unshapped ?

I dont know about anyone else here , but the best I have ever got on the official servers was around the 200 ms , But that was in a low populated area.

During raids I got / get around 400 ms which is prolly the best I will get.

You need to be prepared for crappy latency now and then , unfortunatley thats becos we use stone age internet ....

Welcome to WOW with South African internet :p

his question is more specific, he is comparing a private server to official server both based in the same country.

Effectively it should have the same latency in a non crowded area since he is using the same connection, in fact the official servers should be better since they have hardcore hardware

Yeah I always thought the private servers would run worse, but they run better in all cases, levelling, pvp, raid. I was just wondering if perhaps there is something seriousl wrong with blizz cos my friend with a VPN to blizz gets the same latency i get without one to private server

Private server with lots of people on it = a few hundred maybe?
Official server = a few thousand people.

Unshaped + lat fixes gives me about 280-350 these days.

Im having latencies of 200ms to 1000ms. It seems to vary greatly depending on my time of day. So server load obviously does come into play. But as Crowley said, Blizzard needs to serve hundreds of thousands if not millions of people. Private servers have a few hundred.

I have to admit that I think they are having some headaches of late, seeing so many people are getting DC's while either in a little 5 man instance or especially when going to Dalaran. (spit spit).

I got a Dc in Dalaran the day before yesterday. Was running to do VH... and boom.. you have being disconnected. *rude gesture*

content with my conn for now (requires bottle of Four cousins)

I play wow on EU with a 4mb line .

I use to have horrible lag before 700ms with Telkom unshaped and axxess 626.
I then found out that axxess 626 is only unshaped after 8pm and switched to the more expensive unshaped basic R99 per 1gig. I also then applied the latency fix and got it to 400ms and I dont get dc'ed in Ulduar 25.

I got a web africa trail account shaped and for a brief while on Saturday afternoon i got 186ms..I nearly fell of my chair and called my wife to make sure its not the wine!. I thought to myself im not going to waste this and joined the first Herioc i could find. later during the day the latency climed steadly up to a point where i cannot even log on to wow with it anymore

So now I still use my axxess basic unshaped which gives me 400ms. For now in a 25man raid without any dc so I'm content to say its fine.. but! i want sub 200ms again and not just for an hour.

imo afrihost > axxess. I get lower ping on afri's semi shaped

Afrihost uses IS bandwith
Axess Semi-shaped & 626 uses IS bandwith
626 is basically a Semi-shaped acct that just works after 6

In my experience Unshaped Saix acct (I use Axxess, but does not matter who u buy from) + lowerping = best solution. Anyway, I'm testing them all again2 night and will respond in my other thread

Oh Carp I need to have the "latency fix" done again. Forgot about that one. :$

I dont think that European players are affected that much. Blizzard are serving the vast majority without any issues. I think I have had 2 dc's in the 2 years I have been in the UK, and I play on Sky broadband which isnt the best at all.

When my guild raids its always the same players who DC. Even in ToC. There are some bad ISP's in Europe as well and sometimes there is a general internet issue in a country which hits a lot of players.

Dalaran does have a population issue. This is magnified for SA players because you have to play on a rubbish infrastructure. I dont have any significant problem in Dalaran. Yes, fps drops, but its barely noticable.

quick question vaughan

your latency woes , is during the day time ? meaning from say around 9ish to 5 - 6 in the evening ?

Cos one thing I have learnt that wow + telkom + broadband line during the day is real crap, during the evenings and weekends its fine due to fact that alot of company's arent chewing up all the bandwidth.

The latencies on real server are always bad, regardless of time. The thing is it just bugs me that if i wanna play real wow i now have to pay like R25 a month for a VPN lol, i know it sounds so little but its on top of the subscription. I think i'm obviously not destined to play wow lol, private server has to many bugs and real server is unplayably slow.

wait for diablo 3 then :D

It's called TCP. That's where the whole problem lies. The private server you used obviously used UDP; being recommended for real time traffic such as games. Tcp not so. So effectively, Blizzard are stupid.

There fixed it for you! :)
