I made a real n00b mistake today and ordered a product that I should've done more homework on.

It turned out to be a knock off and not the real thing.

I phoned Capitec to find out if I can reverse the payment, since I used my card and they said they can't.
They can only escalate the matter and stop them from taking more money from my account and they suggest I replace my card.

This sounds so 2000's to me.

Is this normal?

Put yourself in Capitec's shoes. If they take you at your word and "reverse" the payment, they are basically giving you their own money. The recipients bank won't simply hand over money from their customer's bank account.

Furthermore, you could be the scammer for all they know.

They are just covering their back. That being said, you should be able to request a charge back but I assume their are procedures to follow and you would have to provide some evidence. Try going that route.

Also, I presume you have tried getting a refund from the merchant?

Your recourse lies with where you bought the product from to cancel the order. not the bank.
It's a scammer. I thought best to contact my bank. If I could get a reversal, it would resolve the matter.
Bought with normal account card or credit card?
Normal card.

I did request a refund. Standard response was given. Refund will be processed in 7 to 10 days. So it's a waiting game. It's a definite scam. As I said above. If I could get a reversal it would resolve the issue for me. I don't know what a charge back is.

They processed mine after I sent screenshots and other evidence took about a week.

Dude. It's not the bank's fault in this case.

I never said it's their fault. I'm merely trying to understand. If you guys responded that it's the norm, then it is. I just received a response that someone was able to receive a refund through screenshots and evidence. I wouldn't have known that if I didn't start the thread?

You phoned the bank, and they said they can't do it. You post here and comment that they're stuck in the 2000's. Looks like you want them to take responsibility for you choosing poorly.

Also, tell us about the scam. You may save some people from making the same mistake.
It's basically a Smartwatch I bought. Called a Tact Watch. The official supplier is https://t1tactwatch.com/ but there are too many fake sites out there that sell the knock off version. I bought the knock off from a Scammer. I won't mention them here, or I'm giving them free traffic.

Wow man. Seriously. I am merely trying to find out if this is the norm. I don't work in the Banking sector. Am I not allowed to question things? Am I not allowed to query things and ask for solutions to problems?

I assume you made a credit card purchase using the global one debit card.

When doing this the seller has to perform a verification with Capitec/Mastercard during the payment, has this not happened?

When I purchaced something recently from China, the purchase went through successfully, and I received my items(after a long time) however, Capitec refunded the money due to failure during verification.
I called them to ask whats up, and they said that they have a 14 day period in which to perform verification, and the seller did not verify it during that time.

Normal card.
Why I have a Credit card. Apart from all the other benefits it comes with Chargeback protection and it gives me much better peace of mind than the chargeback protection on the Debit card. Plus the Capitec CC is only R35. My bank fees last month were only R42 and my interest R52.4 so it's cheap as chips.

No verification was done through Capitec on this purchase. Entered Card details and wham, money was deducted.

My credit history is a bit messed up currently (had a bit of health issues a few years ago, work issues etc. long story). So I can't opt for a credit card right now. I will when my credit rating improves though.
