Why did Mbeki resign ?

I suspect that there are few weeping tears for Mbeki.

The real concern is the timing of the putsch. I cannot see any overriding reason for not waiting for the upcoming elections, which after all, are only a few months away and could have been called early.

Frankly, given the choice of Zuma or Mbeki, I choose none of the above.

Yeah, two factors at play here.

1. Conclusion of the Zimbabwe crisis. Seems pretty stupid to get rid of the guy who's just done the big deal.

2. The Nicholson Judgement, seems the Pro-Zuma is gonna have a lot of egg on it's collective face should the NPA win their appeal.

That said, the NPA should correct the technicality of not consulting Jacobs legal team by inviting them to lunch.

Charging JZ in the absence of an Mbeki presidency seems like a great bet right now doesn't it boys?

Nationalisation of Telkom/Sasol? I thought government had significant stakes in these companies already.

You, like Mbeki, seem to be far removed from reality. Despite all the huffing and puffing by the likes of Julius Malema nothing will change drastically apart from increased social spending and perhaps more gravy being flung the way of Zuma loyalists in the business community.
Those companies are public, listed companies, if the government owns shares it doesn't mean they are entirely government owned or run - nationalisation is a whole different matter, and the basis behind the collapse that Zimbabwe has experienced.

Fair enough, you think we are far fetched from reality - give me concrete evidence that we are not going to see any left-wing semi communist policies being pushed through, and how they plan on achieving the promises that they have given the masses in return for their support - and no, government budgets alone will not address their needs, just like the Mbeki administration has realised after they where voted into power.

I am far from an Mbeki supporter, but the problem is that instead of getting a better replacement, we are getting a much worse one.

Look at it like this: Anglo American, De Beers, Old Mutual and the banks are the grease that, for the most part, keep the engine that is SA's economy moving. Zuma and his ilk have long ago realised this, just that the message has quite gone through to the likes of Vavi and Nzimande who still fantasize about a Socialist Utopia at the southern tip of Africa. Its not going to happen and the best they'll get, as I earlier indicated, is more social spending from a new administration.

Zuma can't be much worse than Mbeki. You only need to look at the incompentent ministers to draw that conclusion.
