Why do most laptops still come with crap displays?

For everything except movies 16:10 is better. And even for movies 16:10 is great. When last I got a new monitor I made sure to get 16:10. Cost an extra R1000 over the 16*9 monitor though.

My Dell had 1920x1200 in 2006, although it was an extra cost item. Pity you don't get the x1200 displays anymore.

Or Compaq 6715b 1680x1050 circa 2005 (in use right now).
Partialy we can blame MS for this situation, but it is mostly due to the customer demand. If you look what these notebooks are used for - entry level user don't need anything more. It is a reason.

Ha! When I joined my previous company I got one of these as a "hand me down". Was quite happy with it. Couple weeks later my manager told me he had ordered me a new laptop. Great, I thought.... received something with more memory and processing power but a sh*tty 1366x768 screen. I "had" to take the new laptop. Was so pissed off :/

I dunno how the others here cope with 1366x768 on a 15"

If used in conjunction with another screen it's fine to read emails, docs etc. off it while you use the other screen for more real estate heavy apps.

New screens have more intensity and contrast, but pixels are blured and more fatiguing when using couple hours continuously. Maybe because of faster response time - more prone to flicker @60Hz. And 16:10 factor is superior for working with text.

Personally I find the laptop screen at the bottom (i.e. laptop directly in front of me) with the 23" raised above it more easy on my eyes and also neck than with 2 big screens side by side.

Look at how many of those 1366 laptops have HDMI-out ports, as well as the improvement in both onboard graphics chips (the Intel Iris Pro is actually quite decent) and discrete GPUs. They're more than OK to output content to a decent resolution monitor (upwards of 1080p at the least).

Yeah, same here I've got a Dell P1913 hooked up to mine. Same resolution as the old Macbook Pro.

It depends on your budget...for business use most laptops are not sold with FHD / HiRes displays.

For enthusiats you get tons of options...I am typing this on a 2.5yr old Dell XPS15 with a FHD display...it fell into the R10k + category.
Gaming / Workstation grade laptops generally come with HiRes / FHD displays...but also come with a heft price tag.

Yeah a certain Taiwanese manufacturer really drove down the pricing on their new gaming laptops. If by "drove down" you mean "increase by 25% and still don't have IPS panels"

True. 16:9 is a cancer and should only ever be used on TVs. Unfortunately it has now taken over the entire PC market, laptops and desktops. I still have a good old Samsung T240 monitor lying around. Amazing how much more "right" it looks.

I still have my T260. Only upgraded it because I needed to move on from TN.

Now it's gathering dust.
