Why do the players spit

It something to do with their shoelaces. You'll notice players wearing Adidas spit more often.

Dunno, I think saliva builds when you exercise or something. I spit occasionally during swim training, something I never do otherwise.

Not so easy to swallow when you're breathing rapidly while concentrating on the game and moving about. Saliva build up is worse in cold temperatures.

Kind of gross to watch.

They get runny noses from the running in the cold, so instead of blowing it out their noses they suck it into the mouth via the throat canal and spit it out.
Easy solution and less gross than them shooting it out the nose onto the pitch :D

Nonsense. They're just plain filthy.

I used to play league soccer since I was 6 years old til 18 years old. After that I played socially (and still do) about 2-3 times a week, and most of the games are intense, all out games. So I would know. These guys are just plain filthy IMO.

More than anything, your mouth ends up dry during a game - there is nothing to spit. Only time I need to spit is if I have a cold/flu, post-nasal drip, or a heavy chest/heavy cough, and need to get rid of mucous.

Running in cold air does that you don't need to have a cold ;)

I beg to differ. I play on Friday nights outdoors in the cold JHB winter, at 9pm at night. Sometimes we play from 11pm to 1am, and it still doesn't affect me. Most of the guys are play with don't spit continuously like these guys do. And I play with quite a few smokers... Maybe it's just me... but I still think these guys are just plain filthy.

Perhaps its a cultural thing?

I ride a bike, and I can promise you, riding my bike in this cold weather the last 2 day in Gauteng gave me a runny nose like no cold or flu could ever do. And I'm not even remotely close to being sick.... well I hope not :D

LOL@ Cultural thing :D

Yeah well - when I was young...
I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.

During heavy running on the pitch one is forced to breath in/out of the mouth. This causes the moisture in the mouth to evaporate leaving behind a spit like substance that has a consistency slightly thicker than normal spit. Spitting it out is a better option than swallowing (eish that sounds dodgy) since the mouth is uncomfortably dry anyway from the evaporation.

This is also why you'll mostly only see it a while into the match & not at the start too as one would expect if it were a purely psychological habit.

You'll find it mostly occurring in sports that involve running and similar activities (Tour de France, marathons etc) and not weigh lifting etc. i.e. Sports to put load on the respiratory system more than the cardiovascular system.

Definitely, in my culture this is a sign of great respect.
*cough* Dune reference I hope*cough*

Can't they get specially mongrammed/team related hankies? Something that will match their kit so they can tuck it into their pants (I don't see pockets, but I'm not paying too much attention to that area if thats alright with everyone?).

Or spitoons strategically placed along the pitch. :D

Or they could stop spitting. It's the BEAUTIFUL game not the MUCUSFUL game.

Funny, I play football often, and I notice that people all need to spit more.
