Why do we have Affirmative Action?

talentedone, I strongly suspect that you are one or two sandwiches short of a picnic.

AA in theory and AA in practise are about as mutually exclusive as you can get. In the real world we refer to this practise as RACISM. It prevents qualified people like me from holding jobs in corporate SA. It prevents the currently disadvantaged from advancement because all it looks after is a bunch of fat cat black bourgeoisie.

If you honestly believe that a black person with an MBA or any other degree was previously disadvantaged then you are smoking your socks with a benzine kicker. And you're a racist to boot.

Well spoken!

I fear that if we don't, then it's nothing other than reverse racism, that's right mate, I've said it. You might disagree, but you'd have to play the 'race' card to prove me wrong.

Reverse racism? Did you even read the first post. White women, disabled are also included under designated groups

I actually know a few 'previously disadvantaged' people who have since educated themselves, even if it was a daunting task that was made no easier by current politics so I can't completely agree with your MBA statement :)

AA has proved that it does not work, and only benefits the top brass.
And AA has ensured more skills shortages than any time in history.

just think eskom - shining example of how AA benefited us :)

You tried it with Eskom. It failed.

You tried it with Local government. It failed.

You tried it with Government. It failed.

You are trying it with private companies. What would the result be?
Success?

The day you force AA on me or my bussiness, that is the day i close down.

There are easier ways of losing money.
I would rather burn it.(that way, at least i get something out of it.)

So does that mean there are no white men in Eskom. Why are you assuming the power failure is due to Eskom AA policies. Multichoice constantly f.ucks up the transmission and you will say it must have been the AA engineer on duty. What about the vast army of underperfoming whites still holding jobs simply because they are white

They are most certainly included in the groups but are (again, from my experience) mostly, not included in the real world.

I find your reference to me reading your post very funny especially since you didn't read mine, or if you read it, you didn't read beyond the anger that forces you to see what you want to see.

Utter and complete BS!

This country never had a power crisis before 1994. It very seldom had transmission problems with television either.

The reason I write this posts is because I feel there is a need to clarify to some people why we have AA.

I have read a lot of posts from people saying AA should be scrapped as current generation was not responsible for Apartheid. I feel that some of these posts are deliberately ignorant as they are only concerned with blasting AA.

"Affirmative action ensures that qualified people from designated groups have equal opportunities in the workplace."

http://www.labour.gov.za/basic_guides/bguide_display.jsp?guide_id=5848

The reason I have equal opportunities in bold is because that is the thrust of AA : To afford designated groups opportunities that we all know daym well they were not going to get without AA. It is not purely about apartheid redress as most posters have indicated. That is why a statement like "current generation of whites was not responsible for Apartheid" or "reverse racism" is just downright ignorance (could have used stronger words here)

Why is Affirmative Action Necessary?

Affirmative action makes sure that qualified designated groups (black people, women and people with disabilities) have equal opportunities to get a job.

They must also be equally represented in all job categories and levels of the workplace.

My friend,

This reminds me of the guy that was a spectator at a cheetah- lions rugby match.
As luck would have it he ( lion supporter) ended up between a bunch of cheetah supporters.

As he was encouraging his team, a cheetah supporter shouted at him:
:D"Are you brave or just plain stupid?"

White Afrikaans men?

No mention of us?

Because you are already getting a fair share of opportunities. Answer this question honestly: How many White Afrikaans men do you know that are unemployed involuntarily?

One thing that puzzles me. If someone is equally qualified, why have affirmative action. It is a question of attitude, dedication and initiative. As soon as a law steps in you have total chaos.

Sorry but this week my daughter was told because of BEE they are behind on a certain service. This shames us all.

I have wonderful colleagues of black white Indian and mixed origin. I do not discriminate on them on their racial lines. I have just one good rule – do your job. Most of them do.

"Are you brave or just plain stupid?". That is certainly a question I would like to pose to you right now but having read many posts from you before I am certainly not interested in your answer when it is all over the forum for everyone to see which one you fall under.

Calm down.
The debate has only started.

That would place you in a small minority of whites who are willing to give everyone a chance based on merit. Sadly the average Van Der Merwe is not prepared to hence AA steps in to level the playing field.

Affirmative Action is wrong and is proving to be the undoing of this country. It cannot be denied.

Oh, by the way I won't be apologising to a goddam soul about apartheid either. I had fück all to do with it. I was born long after the Nats came to power. If it wasn't for people like me who believed in change the ANC would probably still be planting bombs in shopping malls and outside night clubs.

talentedone, dont be quick to assume ALL white afrikaans men are as fortunate as the rest. Poverty doesnt care about your race or upbringing.
