Why do we long for companionship?

Having said that, can someone keep in touch with other people mostly through the internet? Instead of face to face contact with friends and family, can someone socialise with someone else through the internet via forums or skype or internet chat rooms, or does socialising only mean face to face contact?

On some level I get what I want from socializing on the webz. But on other levels it can't. Forum sex just isn't the same as in real life.
