Why do we long for companionship?

Because we are pack animals.

Why are we pack animals? Because historically the best way to meet basic needs was to converge in groups and work as a team. Our social structure developed on this.

Yea I agree with Picard. Its been wired into our systems! Longing for companionship is like drinking that first cup of coffee in the morning, we don't want it - we NEED it.

For me its all about sex hey, although companions generally make you beg or bargain with you for it so actually i have no idea to be honest :p

Do you mean in the sexual or social sense?

I mean in the sense of, why do people feel the need to date others; get married etc... There's this need to always be close to someone and share everything with them. Well, the sharing part kinda ends as the marriage develops :p

Because otherwise we would probably just kill ourselves out of loneliness and depression :)

Think about it. If all we had was ourselves what sort of existence would that be?

But that's exactly what I'm trying to figure out - why do we get lonely? Why are we the way we are? Why can't we just be by ourselves and not be lonely and/or depressed?

It's probably too big a question. A symptom of my boredom :p

I don't think there's a single answer to such a big question too.

I seriously think we've just been programmed that way. Not sure why! Perhaps it's to ensure we continue to repopulate and the species lives on. On a biological level that makes sense.

On an emotional/spiritual level i feel we need people in our lives to get through lifes ups and downs and we need to feel a sense of belonging in order to be healthy well adjusted mental beings. No man is an island they say!

Having said that, can someone keep in touch with other people mostly through the internet? Instead of face to face contact with friends and family, can someone socialise with someone else through the internet via forums or skype or internet chat rooms, or does socialising only mean face to face contact?
