Why does it take MTN so long to activate a simcard?

For some reason, my simcard became faulty, so I asked MTNSP for a sim swap. Never mind that I have to pay, it will take them 36-48 hours to activate the new simcard. Why?

i had the same problem, never mind the waiting, it hasnt been activated yet and there are no nearby stores so couldn't be bothered. I just use my other contract sim for now

Vodacom are the same, had exactly the same problem, the card actually "snapped" and vodacom just say gimme the money and wait...
