Why does mobile data stop while taking a voice call?

Hi,

I have noticed whenever I am playing a game, or downloading something on my mobile, and a voice call rings, then the data transfer stops. This is happening on CellC & MTN, and on 4G or HSPCA. I am wondering why this happens, and is there a fix for it?

Regards,
deep.

Afaik 4G stays active?

Those are "single threaded" data streams. So if you are making a phone call on a non-GSM network you engage both the up and downstream channels for calling.

Remember mobile broadband services are very similar to Dial-up services. You have have a 64k data stream and still use your landline or you can use both 64k lines for a faster connection(I think this may be ISDN IIRC)

Hi, Thanks for your response... but are't all our mobile networks GSM in South Africa?

I remember something about voice over LTE where they were using the LTE channel to make calls. Was Vodacom IRRC.
There was a way to switch it off though.

No. 4G makes no difference. It's very irritating.

How is it affecting you? Are you downloading something whilst calling?

Whats more irritating is how in some instances call quality is as good as your mic is (ie very clean and clear) but most of the time its still the same ripped apart and then compressed schit audio from the 70's

Vodacom and Telkom offer it. I have tried both services and both of them seem to occupy the full bandwidth of that network channel when making a call.

VoLTE will probably be your only option. It will be able to do calls and data at the same time. 3G can do it too but I noticed the data connection slows to a craw when a call is active.

Try VoLTE

Hi,

Thanks for your response..... It affects me while playing games that require a connection that is on during a game (PVP). It means I lose a connection every time the phone rings... If I am playing golf, I have 30s to make a shot. The time it takes for an incoming call to connect, dis-connect and then for game to reconnect is about 10s. It greatly reduces my chances in a highly competitive match.

Thanks. I'm not sure MTN offers that. Would it be a setting that I must implement via the phone dialer.... like those *34ABC# codes?

I have a dual SIM Samsung A8+, I use cellc as my SIM 1 and a Rain SIM in SIM2 for internet.
When I get a call on cellc the rain SIM internet automatically stops working. I dont think its anything to do with LTE channels or whatever was said before on this thread

I've had the same problem spanning the last few years that I noticed it. Using a S7 Edge, Note 8 & Huawei P30 Pro. On CellC, and on MTN. I have had the same issue with various other networks while using a local sim card in Singapore, New Zealand, Los Angeles, Israel & a few european countries.

I noticed just now on my dual sim phone if calling from the telkom sim it switches from LTE to 3G, data also doesn't work then from the same sim.

I believe it does let data keep running, but it is crazy slow. I notice it if I am on a phone call with my wife and she sends a whatsapp text.... It could take 2 or 3 minutes for text to get through while we are chatting.... usually we disconnect & re-connect if we are sending images.

Just found out, if you are calling and using internet through the same SIM, you are in a 4g network and your network provider supports VOLTE your internet shouldn't get disconnected.
