Why does mobile data stop while taking a voice call?

Can confirm, if sim1 gets a call, 4g data on sim2 stops. Using a Xiaomi Mi A1.

It's crazy... We have these amazing expensive phones with superb mobile data transfer, yet a simple voice call stops the data dead in it's tracks. You would think there is a better protocol....? Anybody here that plays Golf Clash knows exactly what i'm talking about..... maybe 5G modems will handle voice & data at the same time.

Just found out, if you are calling and using internet through the same SIM, you are in a 4g network and your network provider supports VOLTE your internet shouldn't get disconnected.

I'm at work and this is a particularly shite tower, will check again at home.

You are using SIM 1 for calls and SIM 2 for internet and U face no problems? what phone and networks are you using ?

The Huawei P30 Pro we get in SA doesn't have second sim functionality. The second slot can only take the Huawei proprietary extra memory.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. I have checked and I do have VoLTE calls enabled on my device.... I guess I will just have to wait till the network fixes their problems.

Do you see VoLTE sigh next to the network name? If not then it's not activated and you fall back to 3G when making or receiving a call. That should not cause data connection to drop though but on 3G it will be quite slow while the call is active.

That's incorrect, plenty places selling the dual sim device, if you are taking one out on a vodacom contract you will get the single sim one though, they don't want you to use the second sim to add a cheaper data sim

Hi,

I have that device. It has 2 slots, but the second sim does not work. I was just travelling abroad and tried it. It did not work. On return I spoke to Huawei, and got all the way up the chaini to the regional manager who told me the device in SA does not work with a second sim. See the pics attached of the sim tray from my P30 pro. The underside says "NM" only. If it worked with second sim it would say "NM/SIM2"

Hi, I do not see the VoLTE icon in my system tray. VoLTE is turned on in my call settings. I guess it depends on the tower / area I am in.... I will look for it and see if it ever turns on.

You need to have it enabled network side. SO call MTN and ask for VoLTE sevice to be added to your number. When it is active you can make a call and it will still show 4G. Currently it shows 4G and when making receiving a call you probably see H or H+ and that happens because the connection falls back to 3G.

I noticed about 2 years or so ago that callers phoning into radio stations started sounding like crap compared to the poresenters. Now that was about the time the hype about more data was made.

Where did you buy your device?
