Ive got a Dlink router the dsl2740u and i have set up the free dyndns option with the router.

when i type in the dyndns address lets say into my browser it opens the router logon page

How do i point the ip to another address instead of the routers??

I wanna use it for VNC Enterprise

Because you probably doing it from the local lan, and the admin port is on port 80 - what your browser uses.

Do you get the correct external addy if you ping the address?

You cannot! But you can forward specific ports to other addresses on your internal network.

You would google for whatever ports your VNC app uses, probably have to create a new firewall rule or service in the router, and forward that to the ip of whatever machine you want the packets to get to.

if i ping the dydndns name it gives me an external ip yes

My router is 192.168.1.1 which clearly the VNC server isnt on, so how would i get the *.dyndns.org address to resolve to the ip where the VNC server is on whic is 192.168.1.3

It won't and it cannot resolve to 192.168.1.3 because that is not a routable address. Your dynamic dns address will resolve to your routers external (public) ip. All packets will arrive there. By default all will be firewalled.

Now you have to say, VNC uses what port?
Take that port and make an exception for it in the firewall, and tell the router what to do with it when it gets the traffic for that port - (port forward).
Forward on to your 192.168.1.3 address.

If I remember you can log onto the DynDNS page and set the IP address manually.

Port 5900 by default.

Deenem, you right you can, but not his address he wants to use.
And it's right as it should only point to his router.

yes i can - grrr this all frustrates me cos i really dont know what im doing

GRrrrrrr

Log into your router and set it to forward all external requests on port 5900 to the internal ip address of your internal VNC server, there is a section on all routers to do it, should be under " port forwarding" or possibly "virtual server". If you were using a web browser, be sure to enter <address>:5900, as not to connect on port 80 and hit the router log in page.

ok

Virtual server

External port start 5900
External port end 5900

Internal port start 5900
Internal port end 5900

sever ip address 192.168.1.3 (thats the ip of the pc with the vnc sever on)

Am i right with this setting??

Sounds like you might be getting there. TCP not UDP right?

I must go now, but if you don't come right, PM me Monday with the address and username and password and I'll see what you doing wrong. (if you trust me - you can allways change the passwords etc after) depends how desperate you are. ;) or ask Beta to do it if he's sticking around for a while.
