Why don't more people self install?

I wanted a self install, but was told its not available in my area. Can't really understand why not. All techy did was plug modem in and made sure it synced. I connected it to PC and set up PC later.

So, charge Telkom an installation fee. R404 :D

It's a South Africa thing.
Some are just to lazy and other to ignorant to care if they got charged R404, the lady at Telkom said I "have to" pay the install fee.

There are the few that just does not have the skills to self install or really not into IT...

Actually the guy that called me didn't want to send someone out(I didn't ask for self-installation when I ordered), even when I asked when he can send someone if I have problems he said the next day... so I guess he was just nice and know the R400 is a total waste of money. I just plugged the router into the phone line and it worked. I had problems with the verification, I could authenticate with my ISP supplied username and password but could not visit any site even telkoms site. I called the help desk and they gave me a guest acount and 30 minutes later everything worked perfectly.

And for some its just not available. :|

and do away with having to rely on T to install? save time/stress/money etc.

Oh if only it were that easy!

I ordered a "self-install" line in January but have now cancelled the order as I'm going to Ireland for a couple of months.... It doesn't make it any quicker or easier. Phoned every day, got a different excuse every day.

Well since Telkom descided to charge people for self install, I'd pay for the standard install and make damn sure the tech who comes out hooks up my entire home PC base, including the laptops over wireless. R438 just to plug in the Router???

I think the problem would come in from a support point of view. I was glad a didn't self install because I had so many line issues. If I did self-install Telkom would've blamed it on my poor attempt at splitting the line and joining them again. In the end, if there are any problems they have to sort it out because they wired it wrong.

In the UK, I know I continually refer to it, but there we had the option of a wires only service, and about 7 days later enabled it in the exchange and you would connect and all was hunky-dory. A self install is the easiest thing in the world. Normally on the modem you have a power and a link light and if the link light comes up you the line is enabled and then you just install the USB modem as any USB device or a router....simple, and I knew nothing about broadband before I got it in the UK.

derekc, if T do their bit and enable it on the line there should be no reason it should not work, unless there is a high amount of noise on the line, but if it is clean and no crackling, then it should be easy as 1+1=2.

Yeah u right. The problem being 'if Telkom do their bit' and they don't. I had a issue where my line kept on dropping. They blamed it from my modem to my ISP then to the ppl who initially wired my ADSL etc. In hindsight, if I did self-install they prob would've blamed it on me. That's why I was happy I didnt go self-install route as I would've spent a lot of time figuring out if I had wired my line properly. The problem with my line drop was actually the wire at the exchange box. They were old and the insulaiton around the wires were stripped. Took the 2 months to figure that out.

This is probably a isolated case, but I recon 90% if not more of the people should not experience this sort of problem.
