Why DStv cannot offer individual channels

This means I'm paying a lot of money for things I will never watch and for when I'm asleep. There also seems to be a lot of paranormal, pseudoscience, survival, cooking, eating, scrapyard, restoration, "reality", ghost, UFO and socialising programmes on once good documentary channels. Wildlife channels now mainly consist of claws, fangs and poison.

But that's always going to be the case, unless you stream elsewhere instead. Then.. it's a toss up between enough quality / coverage and extra cost due to needing too many sources :- (

@Cosmik Debris - only 2 fair channels for science doccies IMO is your 185 (have a specific look at the current Monday line-up, not great but okayish) and the best - 184 - but that's on Premium only

Worth a second look is 136, is also reasonable though mostly repeats.
Premium-only 121 is also a sad joke now

For nature - best again is 184.

If I were in his shoes, I'd consider an alternative plan. R619 per month seems like a hefty amount for what he's getting in return.

It is a hefty amount and the reason for my complete dissatisfaction. I programme the decoder while drinking my first cup of coffee in the morning and it's sometimes very difficult to find anything watchable or not a repeat for specific times.

Thanks @Brian_G . I do have 136 on my occasionally watchable list. It will be far too much to upgrade to Premium for a single channel 184.

2 minutes worth of searching.

DISCOVERY channel

National Geographic

A 1000 more channels hosting content, as a doccie fan, there is never a shortage of stuff to watch at the price of a youtube premium sub.....I usually load my tablet with shows if anything gets taken down I have it downloaded on my tablet, you can also download content on PC these days......

Not even going to talk about movies and series being hosted on youtube, if you know how to game the youtube search engine you can pretty much find lots of content. Yes most of the content isn't on the legal side of things, but at least it isn't some sketchy torrent or website.

if you know your way around dailymotion you can find even more content and often more obscure stuff...

Why do you need the Compact Plus option?
Only reason usually is for exclusive things like Kyknet. If it were general genres offered somewhere else like WWE on Peacock and Netflix then I wouldn't care so much but nothing else shows the same shows.

Why can normal households not get the "Stay" packages offered to the hospitality industry? I would gladly pay R600 for the Stay Ultra package, that would suit all my viewing needs.

Old Kyknet stuff ends up on 148 Kyknet Lekker, via the cheap Access package only. If you don't mind waiting years for it ;- )

I saw that, and the series ends up on Kyknet&Kie a year later. The funny thing is it seems to be the only channel not also available to Compact and Compact Plus so MC is already breaking their old model where it suits them.

What I don't get is why the old Kwela and such stuff can't be on Showmax. Binnelanders and Suidooster gets on Showmax when the entire series has aired.

Another example is 134 BBC UK which is surprisingly good, I'm told it's not on Compact + or Premium. MC's excuse - users of larger packages would complain that it's just more repeats. Pointless customer micro management or manipulative BS, you decide.

The Dutch, German and ITV Channels disappeared as well. I'm paying more for less. I'm also paying for Russia Today which MC has not dropped despite it not being available since mid 2022.
