Can someone explain the benefits of flashing with Tasmota? The eWeLink app seems to work wonders and coupled with Home Assistant on Raspberry you can do magic with these devices. Not to mention, home assistant allows you to integrate more than just sonoff into one simple to use system with automation and scenes.

Always wanted to flash my devices, but not sure there is a need? Maybe someone can explain it?

For me personally I am not too happy with some chinese company having my wifi details.

I configured my sonoff (with tasmota) and installed a DS18B20 sensor so that I can monitor my fridge and freezer temp. Also incorporated an ON-delay, thus my refridgerator does not turn on and off with a sudden dip in power
With the console you can do some impressive automations. It is a bit more advanced.
I have a more open device. My 2c

Yeah cause they are going to do what with it??

Also a privacy issue for me. Sucks I am late to the bandwagon am struggling to source smart plugs that I can flash.

I think sonoff has changed but originally flashing with tasmota was the only way to remove reliance in the internet.

All my smart stuff (other than Google gome) operates locally on my Lan, more reliable and faster than going out over internet.

Tasmota isn't the only option.

I prefer esphome that is part of home assistant and maintained by them as well.

I agree, having you iot device link to the cloud is bad.

Theres a million reasons to go for Tasmota, but one of the big things for me is using group topics to link many devices together without any need for automations. Also, having one button do multiple things (short press, long press, multi tap) is a really awesome way to control any device on the network from just one button. Again, without any need for automations, it’s already built into Tasmota. Granted, there’s no pretty GUI to do this, but it’s there if you need it.

Another big thing is having devices from different manufacturers have the same interface/operation/features. The brand becomes irrelevant as long as Tasmota supports it. Again, no need for automations to provide this capability
