Last year my mother got a laptop and I set it up and installed Ubuntu for here and set it up so it would be fool proof to use. All she really uses it for is browsing, email and skype.

First problem I had was with the 3g USB dongle and I needed to install some extra modeswitch stuff. The 3g also won't reconnect after you disconnect and you have to remove the dongle and plug it back in to get it to connect again. Then she had constant issues with the mic not working in Skype, this was a really annoying issue and I was never able to fully resolve this issue without me removing the ability to control the system volume. Then she comes over and visits and this week and I try to connect to my wifi and its just dog slow and disconnects all the time, this is when I just lost my nerve.

I boot up a Fedora 16 live usb image, wifi works perfectly, 3g works flawlessly, Skype works with no issues whatsoever. The system is a lot quicker and more responsive and my mother really likes gnome shell too :)

She now has a nice Fedora machine which works like a charm. If you stuck with Ubuntu and haven't tried another non-debian distro, give Fedora a try - you may just be pleasantly surprised :D

True that... My laptop loves Linux mint... Loaded all drivers correctly when installed. After a few months, I decided to try out Ubuntu... Struggled while installing then had driver issues thereafter. Reinstalled Linux mint, worked perfectly again.

I am a long time Fedora user. About two years ago, I gave Ubuntu a try, since everybody rages about it. After a week of battling, I decided to go back.

Ubuntu is nice if you are an average user. But as soon as you want to do something out of the ordinary, it becomes a nightmare.

This is one of the big advantages of Linux. There are so many flavors, you are bound to find something especially for you.

This is a not really true these days. Most mainstream distros are all pretty easy to use, the only thing that Ubuntu is better at is online community - but maybe its just bigger community because there are always issues :D Jokes aside, I think distros like Fedora and OpenSUSE are piss easy to use and not any more difficult to handle than Ubuntu.

The amount of crap I have experienced with Ubuntu is enough to cover a small town, knee deep. Had trouble with Ubuntu on my laptop as well as my mother and sister's laptops.

I currently have a Fedora installed on my laptop (dual boot with Win 7), but had CentOS till recently - CentOS was great to get running, I think only my wireless card gave troubles - but was easy as hell to get running.

Fedora 16 experience is very much the same as yours - easy to get running on a system (component wise) and just overall awesome....I do miss CentOS though :D

Nothing against Ubuntu, even running a few servers on 10.04 with no issues, I cannot stand SuSe, YaST just annoys me, Centos isn't to bad installed on a few of our dev machines, on my mother-in-laws machine I installed Easy Peasy it's a ubuntu 10.04 core with a few tweaks, strangely enough I found 10.04 the easiest and best supported OS, from 11.04 it's been a bit sketchy.

Ubuntu and Linux Mint works best for me, although CentOS and OpenSuse 11 (not 12) aint that bad either...but true that, some Linux distros hate certain PCs and vice versa :P

I tried Fedora after Ubuntu really lost the plot for me with thei UI. I really enjoyed Gnome Shell on Fedora...but I absolutely hated that Yam thing! URG.

Installed LInux 12 with Gnome Shell and LOVE it! I really love that everything just works out of the box and installing software is easy peasy. I have am currently giving Cinamon desktop a bash...and its cool..but think I still prefer Gnome Shell that Mint comes with.

I also switched from ubuntu a few months ago to fedora 16 on the desktop am loving it, I wish fedora would also release a server version. I still use ubuntu server in production though no issues there.Yum is actually pretty good once you get the hang of it.

It's called Red Hat Enterprise Linux or CentOS if you want the free version. Or maybe look at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL

RH sponsors Fedora so I don't think they are gonna shaft them by creating a server release, I honestly don't know the deatails around this.

One thing that sucks big time on Fedora is their package manager and update utility GUI's. I just use yum from the command line. There is yumex, which is better than the standard gui's, but command line yum still better.

Kubuntu FTW. You have the advantage of the Ubuntu repositories and user base, and nothing I've come across beats synaptic as a package manager front-end.

I think it is all about personal preference - for me, command line is awesome. I am not big on GUI's, learnt linux from command line so....

I am using it as a server as well, but the last time I did a server from scratch was with Fedora 14. There used to be an option during install, to select server instead of desktop. But then again, I normally use the full DVD version.
