Last year my mother got a laptop and I set it up and installed Ubuntu for here and set it up so it would be fool proof to use. All she really uses it for is browsing, email and skype.
First problem I had was with the 3g USB dongle and I needed to install some extra modeswitch stuff. The 3g also won't reconnect after you disconnect and you have to remove the dongle and plug it back in to get it to connect again. Then she had constant issues with the mic not working in Skype, this was a really annoying issue and I was never able to fully resolve this issue without me removing the ability to control the system volume. Then she comes over and visits and this week and I try to connect to my wifi and its just dog slow and disconnects all the time, this is when I just lost my nerve.
I boot up a Fedora 16 live usb image, wifi works perfectly, 3g works flawlessly, Skype works with no issues whatsoever. The system is a lot quicker and more responsive and my mother really likes gnome shell too
She now has a nice Fedora machine which works like a charm. If you stuck with Ubuntu and haven't tried another non-debian distro, give Fedora a try - you may just be pleasantly surprised
