Why I don't like Ubuntu.

debian sid been my main distro forever.

used to always have a fedora installed. haven't had one in ages.

though i started with suse, there is something about it since about suse 9 i haven't liked.

liking arch as my backup distro.

I'm using Fedora myself for the last 6 to 7 years. The other day my wife was complaining that somethings wrong on her netbook, Windows XP wasn't lekka. So I thought I'd see what she can do with Linux. I considerred Fedora, but opted for Linux mint because everyone was saying that the DVD download had all the codecs and everything ready in one package.
Everything worked just great, it was just her wireless driver that needed installing, but Mint sorted that out itself after I plugged it into my router, installed Cinnamon to sort resolution problems with Gnome 3. And my wife is loving it.
I'm still a Fedora fan, but Mint definitely turned my head (much better than the Ubuntu I tried a year ago).

Reading all these Linux forums, it seems so much...fun! I've got an Android that I am playing around with, would you say there are similariies between Android and Linux? Are the different Android ROM's like the different Linux distro's? (If not, at least from a noob's perspective?)

Not really, and yet maybe.
:D

I have been a Linux user for many a moon, and Android does not really feature Linux well. Linux is there somewhere (the kernel, if you know what that is) but the applications, user interface and general usability... that is open for debate (Linux is much more open than Android, etc.)

Things I like about Linux, and what Android have in common:
* The app stores/repositories - I do not have to hunt down, search for a download link, download and install an application. All I need to do is to select it in a package manager, click install and presto! I cannot believe Microsoft is still in the dark ages regarding this, it is just so effortless. If there are still smart phone vendors that do not feature this then they need to die out like the dinosaurs.

* Choice - you can theme the heck out of Linux and Android and make it truly unique. An iPhone is an iPhone, but look at the screen shot thread in any Linux and Android forum and you can see just what you can do. Similarly I can install just what I want. There are so many different ROMS that cater for so many features, same in Linux, there is a mountain of choice. This can be daunting for the newbie, but exciting since it only costs you the download of an ISO, same with ROMS.

We can debate this further, it is late (or early) and I'm struggling to form coherent sentences.
:p

Thanks! After I kill this MBA beast, I will most definitely open myself up to the worlf of Linux. (If I don't get killed first!) And I will probably ask a ton of noob questions :o

Ive been using Ubuntu from the start... BUT with the recent UI change... I switched to PCLinuxOS: BRILLIANT move! I just installed the Full Monty edition and it comes with EVERYTHING you'll EVER need. no need for internet connectivity to install anything cos its already installed!!! Now, all I need is a better machine!
