Hey people,

Firstly sorry if this is in the wrong section, if so please move.

Here is my little tale of "Why I hate all Cellular Operators in South Africa" and by that i mean all (MTN, Vodacom, CellC and Virgin)
I am currently engaged to my fiance who unfortunently resides in the UK. Now one would think that with so many expates living abroad that at least one of the afor mentioned companies would have a special levy for people such as myself who need to maintain contact with loved one's living abroad........well well...NO SUCH THING exists in good old SA. No beacause here we have fat cat companies that leech and mooch every last penny from you....the "honest" client.

I did some research across each network, and the cost of a single sms/text message overseas/abroad is R1.50! yes R1.50 per sms. So a 2 part sms is R3.00...and so forth. Surely this is a blatant ripoff?

I mentioned this to a Vodacom insider and was told that that needs to be directed to their operations manager, and nothing was heard again. This same Vodacom insider told me that "..it probably costs us less than 0.10c to actually send that message" WTF!!!!

I checked this fee across the whole board and not in one single package, pre paid or contract is the price different, R1.50 on everything, and across every network.

Is this fair? Surely something should be done about this! I spend in an excess of R1500.00 per month on my telephone bill, of which maybe R300 is actually calls made. Unfortunently being in a age of information and instant contact one NEEDS to have a cellphone and thus be linked to one of these fat cat companies. Even after 2 years of this, i have never received a curtousy call or anything from my ISP (Vodacom) for this. Surely it doesnt take a a lot to come up with a tariff package that is targeted at people such as myself?

What are others views on this?

Just some of the many IM services available for to use for FREE!

So when your busy in your office and need to send a txt/message to someone, you now need to go through the rigmarol of logging in and waiting for your partner before typing a message on your phone etc etc

where txt message is so much easier? That is even if you can PUT that software on your handset.

Do other countries have special rates for SA? For example does your fiance over in London get to phone you for half the price?

Actually.....she has a code she enters into the phone and the calls are like half the rate, we tested this cause i didnt believe it......and it really worked! Checked on the phone bill too!

Ahh well in that case i agree with your statement then. I thought this was commonplace all around the world.

Pity as if one of the service providers picked up on this need they would probablly make more money charging people less to sms/phone overseas. My family live in England and i would definitely benefit from a service like this.

Well most IMs today interconnect with the PC version, you can chat on Mxit via anyone of Messenger, Google Talk and even Mxit PC.
It also allows you to send offline messages, so when the user logs in you can see the message.
It doesnt take long to log in, probably the same or faster to get onto Mxit than to get to your sms option on some phones.
Theres alot of way this guy can get around his huge bill, imo R1.50 is still decent an sms a day to keep in touch or whatever.

Forget the R1.50 for an international sms, we being ripped of for sending normal sms's! Props to Virgin for offering free unlimited sms's, if they can do it, cant see why the big players cant do so too.

However as pointed out, make use of othe facilitiesr like instant messaging, and using voip.

i thought there were all rules and exceptions to the unlimited sms thing? it's not as great as they make it out?

I dunno about the rules and exceptions etc, but it must still be better then anything the big players offer.

Phone 173 from an mtn prepaid phone, phoning to the UK from SA is not more expensive than a local call.

And from Vodacom?

I just fail to see why or how nobody has thought of something like a reduced rate! Considering R1.50 is like 150% markup on a 10c message!

Blatant ripoff, and it's not cheaper wether your on pay as you go...or contract.

or forget about me and my gripes, what about tourists that come here and have to pay these ridiculous prices?? Most tourist wont knwo about mxit and so forth!

It's cheap for tourists, 'cause then the exchange rate comes into play.

You can use Skype or VoipCheap to send very cheap SMSes internationally.
Even better-- get your girlfriend to set up email on her mobile, that way she can read emails from you - free for you, cheap for her. She'll get an email address eg [email protected] Sending Emails back to you from her
mobile is easy too. That's what people in East Asia do, SMS is dead there,
everyone just emails on their mobiles and it's cheap (no-one sends SMS).
