Just some of the many IM services available for to use for FREE!

We get ripped off big time - no arguments there! But working around it is easier that trying to reform the cellular providers. I use Fring for IM and VOIP. It works on most new handsets - only requires java - and runs in the background. Like Skype etc. the voice quality is not perfect but saves me plenty each month.

I have my skype, MSN, Gtalk setup on Fring. Voip part of Fring is rather decent, considering. I find IM like MSN/Gtalk MUCH better than SMS, at a 10th of the price in data.

PS... I moan about the Data interconnect charges, but if you consider that all the Cell providers still have to pay a stupid premium to Telkom to make calls, you'll understand the prices. Vodacom's CC once told me to rather just use Telkom land line, since its cheaper. Personally use iBursts iCall VOIP service. Better quality than Skype BY FAR.

I think you should also have a look at Vodafone passport.

A friend of mine went to France and said he saved a ton of money by using Passport.

I feel T\R1.50 is fair for an international sms, its not really transferred via normal data channels.
My dad works in ireland, and I must admit, i cant spend R1.50 * 3 per day to keep in contact, we just phone, works out cheaper.

Whoever said that vodacom doesn't even do courtesy calls, lol, I am with vodacom too, and I did get courtesy calls, FROM MTN. "Sir, we value you more than vodacom values you, switch to us" kind of call :)
But im sorry, cannot do MTN, their ads clearly tell me that my demographic is not welcome.
