Don't you guys ever get tired of these types of threads? Label me all that you wish, but REALLY now, this is getting nonesensical. RPM should create a sub-forum for you guys to go and play in.

And maybe I should add, if you live in Africa, then you are an African (as Solidarity and Co say), then by definition according to some on this forum, you are a failure. Now, maybe you should move on to the first world countries you speak of so much and leave the rest of us to sit with our failures?

Why is Africa a Failure?

Is it?

It's a perspective thing, folks, a perspective thing.

If we had to take a step back and ask one single question about the entire planet, what would it be?

Will we be obliterated by nuclear war?
Will we be scuppered by global warming?
Will we be buried in our own waste?
How many animals will face extinction today?
Will there be peace in the middle east?

Define failure.

If Africa has failed based on western "values", do we need to ask ourselves whether those values had any merit in the first place?

Hmm, funny, I recall that historically, Africa was plundered by greedy European countries.

So, dare we cross into that "unpolitically correct" territory that some have hinted at in this thread?
... and if we do, are we qualified to do so?
What is it that was hinted at?
That African people just aren't as intelligent?

It's a very complex issue and as Debbie2 pointed out, one that we probably will never resolve.

The important thing is to try to fix Africa, not play the blame game. (That means you too, ANC...)

Please do not tell me what to do, it is unnecessary as I haven't indicated that I'm not keeping my cool.

It would appreciated if we could all stay on track without derailing this thread with opinions regarding ANC incompetence, BEE/AA, Eskom etc., which can be done in another thread. South Africa's history is a lot different to that of the rest of Africa.

That the conundrum. You are but fail to see or realize any of it. A African Utopia. BTW last i heard and according to my ID/Passport I am not and cannot claim as been African, Neither European so me, I am just white?

I was actually thinking that - what's the point anymore. In any case I'll add my 5c.

Where others see failure, I see the opportunity to succeed. It's a simple supply/demand thing that people simply don't want to see. When there is a shortage of something, a demand ensues - instead of complaining about the state of things, do your part to fill the void. Who knows, you might even get rich in the process.

And there's no need to throw the usual BEE/AA crap at me, I've heard it all before. It doesn't stop one from being creative. Besides, do a simple search on any recruitment/job site - I can guarantee you that less than 10% of positions are AA only. Furthermore I've come across ads that explicitly state things like "white female" or "white male" or "must be fluent in Afrikaans" etc. Would any of the moaners take offence to something like that? AA doesn't stop you from seeing a need in a market and being creative in order to try and satisfy it.

I don't benefit much from BEE, but I try my best to see gaps that might exist and try to fill it. Yes this country (and continent) has it's problems, but moaning online will not get you anywhere, it will only add to your hostility. Really now, this argument is getting old. Learn to live with it and move on with your lives.

As Nelson Mandela (quoting Marianne Williamson) would say, who are you not to be great?

I'm inclined to agree with this. This doesn't really belong in news and current affairs. As far as the "leave the rest of us" part goes, I would counter that genuine criticism must be acknowledged.
There's also too much preoccupation with historical justifications, even though I must concede there is some validity to them.
Even if you remove all the material obstacles, this country, and Africa, still needs people to step up with a plan and the political will to make it happen. If/when this happens, we need to put our weight behind it (assuming they are given an electoral mandate of course). I think Mbeki desperately wanted to be this man, but it appears to me that his legacy will be an even more polarised country than before.

The whole of europe was utterly destroyed in world war 2 and it only took a few years to rebuild it all and become as first world as ever.
