good products with good marketing,as we speak thinking if I should buy an ipad
I'm currently reading "Fascinate" by Sally Hogshead (Amazon) wherin she describes seven triggers that activates a person to buy/support/follow/etc. The seven triggers are: (1) Lust (craving for sensory pleasure); (2) Mystique (lures with unanswered questions); (3) Alarm (threatens with negative consequences); (4) Prestige (5) Power; (6) Vice (tempts with "forbidden fruit"); and (7) Trust (relaibility and certainty).
She also describes "Gold Hallmarks of a Fascinating Message": (1) Provokes Strong and Immediate Emotional Reactions; (2) Creates Advocates; (3) Becomes "Cultural Shorthand" for a Specific Set of Actions or Values; (4) Incites Conversation; (5) Forces Competitors to Realign Around It; (6) Triggers Social Revolutions.
Successful companies/brands activate/satisfy these triggers and gold hallmarks. Apple sure knows a thing or two about these triggers and hallmarks.
What made you buy the book?
From an iPad owner - yes, do it, however I would wait till the new model comes out - reputed to be January 2011, where there will be a camera and a few more hardware additions added. If those aren't important to you, then go ahead - I give you my word that you won't be sorry.
From BeVonk's 7 triggers, I would say, for me, that Apple rates as follows:
1) Yes
2) Yes
3) No
4) No
5) No
6) No
7) Yes
I often wonder if Apple will be the same without Steve Jobs. He's the guy for whom fonts matter ... every detail of the look and feel - the user experience - matters to him. Is there more of him in that organisation? For me this attention to detail (design, materials, UI, etc) sets Apple appart from the rest.
I would say 4 is a "yes" as well. In my mind Apple definitely triggers prestige (in a positive way). There are MP3 players, and there is iPod.
