Why is Apple so successful?

I'm currently reading "Fascinate" by Sally Hogshead (Amazon) wherin she describes seven triggers that activates a person to buy/support/follow/etc. The seven triggers are: (1) Lust (craving for sensory pleasure); (2) Mystique (lures with unanswered questions); (3) Alarm (threatens with negative consequences); (4) Prestige (5) Power; (6) Vice (tempts with "forbidden fruit"); and (7) Trust (relaibility and certainty).

She also describes "Gold Hallmarks of a Fascinating Message": (1) Provokes Strong and Immediate Emotional Reactions; (2) Creates Advocates; (3) Becomes "Cultural Shorthand" for a Specific Set of Actions or Values; (4) Incites Conversation; (5) Forces Competitors to Realign Around It; (6) Triggers Social Revolutions.

Successful companies/brands activate/satisfy these triggers and gold hallmarks. Apple sure knows a thing or two about these triggers and hallmarks.

good products with good marketing,as we speak thinking if I should buy an ipad

From an iPad owner - yes, do it, however I would wait till the new model comes out - reputed to be January 2011, where there will be a camera and a few more hardware additions added. If those aren't important to you, then go ahead - I give you my word that you won't be sorry.

From BeVonk's 7 triggers, I would say, for me, that Apple rates as follows:

1) Yes
2) Yes
3) No
4) Yes
5) No
6) No
7) Yes

What made you buy the book?

I find the subject matter fascinating :D. The psychology behind shopping and brand tribalism fascinates me, always has. There's another book that I was after titled "Buy-ology" but couldn't get it for the Kindle in SA so I bought this one. Excellent reading. Just finished the chapter on "Lust" and Apple definitely scores high on that trigger. See author's website for more details: sallyhogshead.com (check out and download her first book "Radical Careering" for free).

I would say 4 is a "yes" as well. In my mind Apple definitely triggers prestige (in a positive way). There are MP3 players, and there is iPod.

I often wonder if Apple will be the same without Steve Jobs. He's the guy for whom fonts matter ... every detail of the look and feel - the user experience - matters to him. Is there more of him in that organisation? For me this attention to detail (design, materials, UI, etc) sets Apple appart from the rest.

You are absolutely right, 4 should be a yes, I don't know why I put it as a no. I will go change it

Very easy answer, they have dumb followers, same reason the useless anc is "popular" :)
My sis is one of them, sold my iphone 4 to her after I had it for 1 hour
