Why is esports coverage so bad in SA?

Sadly from what I've seen the 2-way street is exactly the problem.

And it doesn't go the way you would expect it to.

Companies want everything...while giving nothing in return.

I cringe every time I see one of these "celebrity" dota players.

Forever-alone-loser-virgin's and then I cringe even more to hear that so many other gamers ride their dicks and treat them like royalty.

I do understand sponsors reluctance to sponsor a team though. Give people 5x R30,000 computers in return for what.. a small label on a t-shirt,a in-game sponsor tag that only 300 people will see where maybe 1 of those 300 will buy from that sponsor.

As advertising goes that is dirt cheap.

Maybe so, but the return on the investment must be pretty low, regardless of how cheap it is.

--Just speculating, have no clue how well the vendors do because of their sponsoring

eSports and competitive gaming put steelseries and Razor on the map, other brands like Corsair and Logitech expanded their product range. Mediums like Twitch enables sponsors to be visible. In the US, TV networks are currently buying into eSports.

I'm the Zombiegamer site owner and also now write for MWEB (brought in to start focusing on local content) as well as run and host a variety of tournaments (I have also worked with Orena and many of the CT-based gaming lounges for events).

I think the reason many other sites are not that quick to jump in and cover local eSports is pure numbers. It honestly does not get a lot of traffic for most of the sites, so it's easier to focus on non-competitive gaming news. On ZG it's becoming tougher for me to get to cover each event separately as I am now a one-(person) show on the writing side and have to prepare for upcoming events, activations, etc. too.

In an effort to cover as much as possible, I opted for the weekly news coverage of local events, results, etc. But one of the difficulties in covering SA eSports is finding all the information. It's tough enough finding tourney/event details but results are another thing completely (unless the results come from an MWEB, Telkom, Orena, etc. tournament).

Chess is a recognised sport by the International Olympic Committee and is classed a mind sport, and is sanctioned by the World Chess Federation. Though electronic gaming isn’t physical in nature, it is a competition and has ongoing championships (thus a cycle), this is acknowledged by many sporting associations. Between (2015-2020), electronic sports will mature to the mature ‘true sports’ audience as it is already happening at an rapid pace in US/Canada, Europe and Asia, then it will be recognised as an sport.

Would be much easier if we had an active Gaming league (Not DGL) and it was actually broadcast either via streaming or TV. Imagine a Venue/club in each city. Then have regional comps (Gauteng) Natal etc. All round robin games. Then you have an SA team to compete globally. The interest is there. The actual drive for someone to start such a thing is not.

All one needs to go is start some kind of Affiliation. Get local clubs to subscribe to your affiliation and grow it. Does require a lot of ground work doubt anyone really has the drive or passion for that unless they unemployed :p

One day this will be the reality, and this is just starting in other countries. Big money is involved, just look at Dota the international, Prize pool this year is already over $15mil and growing
 
Ye with you on that one Jaco.... esports is much bigger than some people care to think or admit, I for one get very excited watching some of these games, from the wow arena comps to dota comps.... must admit have not watch any fps ones yet though.
 
Well, this just adds to it I guess. Bvd just got destroyed by envy 16-3 unfortunately.. But that's not the issue.. ORENA were meant to be streaming it, they have a SA flag with a link to their twitch channel on the eswc home page, yet it was offline for the entire match. Absolutely pathetic. Coverage? Pshht.

Actually this already exists in South Africa. Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) was constituted in 1985. MSSA started sending official South African Teams to international competitions for eSports in 2005. All such teams were allowed the use of the Protea Badge by the South African Minister of Sport and Recreation.

MSSA runs Regional, Provincial and National LAN championships as well as Online Championships.

Not only that, but MSSA also runs officially recognised inter-school championships.

Affiliation to MSSA by a club is also cheap and simple. A club pays R100,00 per annum to be a member, while Registered Players pay R89.00 per annum.

When to consider the full ambit of MSSA's activities, that it is volunteer run, you should be asking yourself why you are not a Registered Player.
