Why should contract customers pay for CLIP

true but why should we have to pay? Prepaid users get this for free.
Prepaid users can also get a replacement SIM for R0.99, what do contract users pay? R99.00?

Is it only Vodacom that still charge for CLIP? I just checked on my Cell-C invoice and I am not charged for CLIP.

I don't see any reason to have a contract apart from getting your phone on credit

Pre paid customers don't pay for CLIP. Why should contract customers pay?
prepaid customers don't get CLIP for free - it's included in the charge.

Contract customers at least have the option of leaving it off, an option not available to prepaid customers for obvious reasons.

There's no such thing as a free lunch.

I see an article coming soon on mybb 'The true cost of CLIP' by staff writer (also known as Shameel Jussab).

With vodacon, just tell the guy at the counter 'but my friend signed the same contract and they got it for free!' And in all likelihood they will grudgingly add it

CLIP is not included in prepaid charge. You pay for airtime and that's it.

this

I wondered same thing when I noticed the Autopage would have to enable CLIP(something between R5-R15 I think) per month.

Prepaid does get it free, it's just one of those things they charge because they can and lets face it, R5x10000 contracts is a lot of money for something free on prepaid.

Why I will never get a CONtract

I applied for a new contract of R79 pm and was forced to pay an additional R9,50 for CLIP.

Another CPA violation, namely false advertising by Vodacon.

Reg 23(6) of CPA
Subject to subsections (7) to (10), a supplier must not require a consumer to pay a price for any goods or services—
(a) higher than the displayed price for those goods or services

Not a violation, you are not not forced to pay for it. Optional extra which every normal person needs and expects

Wrong. You pay one charge that says "airtime". Included in that single item is the CLIP charge, and a host of other cost elements. You just don't see it because there's no option to opt out of those charges.

People just don't think carefully about these things. There are still many contract customers who think they get a handset for free. Or new car buyers who think the service plan is included at no charge. They don't. It isn't.

Seriously. Prepaid customers pay for CLIP.

If that is true, contract customers who already pays for CLIP and who has a top-up plan, will pay again for CLIP because (as you profess) it's already included in prepaid airtime. This is in violation of CPA.

On most contracts, CLIP is an optional extra, it's only on my latest contract Vodacon is forcing me to pay for CLIP. If CLIP is included in prepaid, then CLIP is also forced on prepaid users and they have no choice, which is in violation of the CPA.

On my previous contract with Vodacon, I didn't pay for CLIP but still received the service. My gut feel is Vodacon has no control who receives the CLIP service and who don't. Everyone gets it, but some gets scrĘwed from behind as well!

However which way you look at it, the consumer is conned.

Prepaid call rates are pretty much lower than contract call rates nowadays. So how are prepaid customers paying for it?

Not necessarily.

The definition of "airtime" is not fixed or absolute. It is quite possible to have different airtime rates differentiated by customer type, contract type, etc.

For example, I have a contract with a fixed rate per call and per megabyte of data. It's a SIM only contract, with no handset. The "call rate" is different from the rate for other contract types from the same network provider.

Cellular providers can and do have differentiated call rates. They are not obliged to break out the detail.

The CPA only requires that the purchaser know the full cost and scope of service before they enter into the contact.

CLIP is a real additional cost to telco's since the ring includes a data string that is not necessarily a part of the call connection. There's a bit in the data string that allows a yes/no for display of CLIP. For simplicity, all telco's transmit the CLIP in any case. The only question is whether they seriously bill a customer for it or not.

It's included in the prepaid charge.
