Why Subaru's have 'flat' engines

Actually this has brought up something interesting which has made selling a car very different today when compared to say 20 years ago.

90% of the people who come on to the floor have researched our cars very thoroughly on the net, and many of them have actually read stuff about American or European spec models and expect ours to be the same. We have one guy at the moment, throwing his toys out the cot because he cannot get an STi hatch which is only available in the States. It was never popular here, and we breathed a great sigh of relief when it was replaced by the 4 door version. This guy wants us to contact Japan and demand that they build a hatch just for him and send it out here! Not as simple as it sounds, as the hatch is only built as a LHD now, so obviously they aren't interested.

I had another one last year who wanted his car built up with gold wheels and the OTT signwriting- these guys don't seem to realise that if they want a one off, perhaps they should be looking to a coachbuilder of sorts and not a run of the mill car maker.

Hatch > Sedan

And in most cases I even prefer 3 door hatch over 5 door hatch. Compact, manoeuvrable and powerful is how I like my cars, perfect for the city :)

So it annoys me when companies don't bring in hatches or 3 door hatches.

You may personally like hatches, but our sales dropped by nearly 70% when we introduced the hatch. To keep it would have been financial/business suicide.

At the end of the day, you try and supply what the market wants, and in our case, the market does not want a hatch.

Yeah I know people in SA hate hatch. In the mayority of SA the concensus is, the bigger, the better.

Most 3rd world countries are like that. That is why they made the Fiat Duna (Uno Sedan) in Brazil and why the Corsa/Astra Classic were created.
