Why the confusion in lighting technologies?

There's nothing that will grate my OCD than having LED bulbs out. I see the newer Audi's don't suffer from this problem though.

Yeah but I bet the failure rate is still very very low in a purely statistical sense.
 
I wonder if the warranty will cover tha?t - motorplan/maintenance plan will definitely if you have that option or if you have extended it.

The warranty should cover anything by default.

It's the motor/maintenance plan where it would be an optional cover I reckon.

25,000 hours is the average lifespan of an LED...so they would have a very big fight on their hands if they tried to tell me it's wear and tear.

50,000hrs at 10hrs continuous use a day is the average span for a modern LED. That's around 13.5 years use at 10 hrs a day. Also the lifespan of an LED is generally based upon the light output falling to 70% of it's original output, so it could go on for many more years.

Yeah and cars very rarely do 10 hour days so it should outlast the body work of the car quite happily.
 
Just wait for it, in a few years you'll see folks driving around with only 1 LED in the brake light cluster functioning because it hasn't failed completely yet.

Those lifespan ratings refer to perfect conditions right?

Nope, LED's are solid state and are very hardy, As long as water does not get into the light cluster and cause a short circuit or corrosion, there is no reason why they would fail. They are very sensitive to high voltage though, which can cause premature failure - so voltage proper voltage regulation is critically important for the longevity of the diodes life.

The original Golf MK1 realeased in the late 70's had LED's in its instrument cluster for the battery, turn signal and water warning indicators. I have never hear of one fail ever. (ignore the red circle in the image below);

It's usually the circuitry around the LED's that tend to give way, particularly resistors.

I doubt it, as some cars have all LEDs, some have a mixture of both and the rest all incandescent.
