I would like to know what the rave is about tablets.
Afterall, they are not a substitute for PC\'s or laptops. They have very small storage capacity.

So what are they being used for? surfing the net, e-book reader, e-mail? If this is the case, then they are very expensive toys!

At 10 inches, why not purchase a good laptop and be productive with it? or am I missing something?

Or just get a HTC Desire HD :D

They make for great toys. So yes, an expensive toy. Also, they can do some of the work of a laptop for a fraction of it's weight, and with way better battery life.

Also I think in a few years they're gonna become one of those commodities that just everybody has. So it's sort of a vision of the future.

seriously though... Seems like some blokes just need to feel something big and heavy in their hands (read 10 inches worth rofl )

I think it's more about balance, a 10inch in one and and one in the other. Which is probably why the koreans figured that a 7inch tablet would have more market appeal :)

It's not a novelty - it's an accessory. Quite an expensive one yes, but incredibly functional.

What he said.

I have a tab and a droid smart phone. Tab is definitely an expensive but incredibly functional accessory. I use my tab every day :D Mostly for watching media just before I sleep, or listening to an ebook. When Im away from my PC its great to ssh into my servers to do admin stuff on the fly.

I use my tab everyday for browsing and emails mostly. It is lightweight, requires little charging, and starts up instantly. What's not to like. :)
I'd say that for me the novelty value is mostly found in the millions of useless apps you can download!
Look it's definitely something that you could easily make do without; but that doesn't mean that it's worth dismissing.

I'm not draw to them either... they fall between a smart phone and a laptop, which doesn't appeal to me.

* Too big to fit in my pocket
* Too limited to replace a laptop.

Things that a tablet can do better than (IMHO) any other common form factor, e.g. smartphones (including 4" and above), netbooks+laptops, desktops:

1) Read full length books comfortably. This especially applies to books with heavy graphical elements - graphic novels, comics, magazines - which suffer with E-ink.
2) Portable gaming. Netbooks/laptops are a schlep to game on when you're travelling (plus lack of dedicated low power games), and smartphones don't control very well IMO. Tablets have a better balance.
3) Casual surfing - which actually means the majority of web surfing.
4) Note taking/time management/organisational, workflow related job stuff.
5) For little kids, tablets are incredibly useful as educational toys. My toddler is entranced by the Dora/Pooh etc games available when I show him the iPad.

Personally I don't NEED a laptop to work on. I have a PC for that, and I like it that way.
