Why uncapped ADSL?

I sometime wonder if we'll ever catch up.

Nice article though - small typo. Last paragraph should read "lose out"

3 GB has been deemed enough for web surfing and checking emails by Telkom and it has become the figure that has stuck. This decision not only restricts ordinary Internet users but also innovation in the local IT industry.

i guess that using adsl makes me an abuser cause i don't do just email and bit of surfing. p2p and 'heavy'downloads.nevermind gaming.....

With high line rentals Telkom cannot implement big caps because that opens the door for small operators to get into the market and use wireless networks to share the line costs. That’s what happened some months ago with the relatively cheep 30 Gig accounts.

I have one question: "What/Where on God's earth is the apparent Second National Operator?" And I honestly do not think that we will see any real benefits from the SNO, as I think they will have the same business model as Cell C.

There SHOULD BE NO CAP. They should charge you only for the Access Speed of your monthly subscription to the NET.

if there must really really be a cap let it be 30gig. /me looks sadly at HongKong 20mbs :( .

mmm might be cheaper flying to hongkong download my stuff and fly back?

Problem is the way Telkom have structured ADSL in SA, its a wIn WiN situation for them since they get the money directly from the consumer rather than indirectly as a provider in other countries with smaller profit margins but larger userbase. If sno comes out with the international standard practice it will send Telkom to yesteryear ;) but ofcause they won't cause it will also mean slower profit generation etc. Ah the perils of corps..
