Why you should always pull on an ATM card slot before using it

What you should do is use cardless cash withdrawals and never insert your card into an ATM.

Use a mobile app. Retailers should adopt a cardless system as well for those who don't want to use cash or a card.

It is remarkable how slow retailers are to adapt to technology. Some shops don't even accept cards yet. Let alone payment apps or NFC card or app taps. Very frustrating. My local Spar has NFC Card machines but their POS Software "hasn't been updated yet" despite having the machines for 6 months.

Strangely enough, the US also have very little of this. Chip cards are now only being rolled out and they still give you instructions at every terminal and still rely heavily on cash and cheques. But given our huge fraud levels and available tech, one would think that it would be implemented quicker over here.

It costs them money to have card machines in the store. Tell the banks to lower their fees and more will adopt them.

What retailers don't realize is that it costs them more money if they don't have a credit card machine.

I for one will walk right to the next shop where my card is accepted. You don't accept cards, not my problem. I can buy whatever you're selling elsewhere. It's your loss really.

Besides, fees can be negotiated. Wappoint for example will beat any written quote from a bank. https://www.wappoint.co.za

Enter Snapscan and Zapper as well as the other lower cost "online" solutions.

Lower or no hardware costs with lower fees.

100% with you there.

This week I went to a barber and simply assumed they would take cards. Upon needing to pay I was told cash only and then needed to take a walk to the ATM.

Even though it was a great shop and did a good job I will not return because of this.

It's actually at the point where I feel you should have a very large and obvious sign if you run a cash only business so I can avoid it. Sure there are symbols on the window if you support cards but with that now being the norm it's kind of silly.

If the mobile flea market can support card transactions then brick and mortar shops have no excuse.

Why? You know they do a good job, does paying in cash offend your sensibilities that much?

Yup, because I just don't carry cash.

And there are others that are just as good that do take a card and are easier to get to so it just adds one extra reason not to make the effort.

A simple case of one vs many and putting yourself in the losers circle.

We have actually been ahead of the game with these things over the first world with solutions like Snapscan and Zapper getting there long before the banks.
Last time I check I can't pay with ipay

Apple Pay you mean?

That's exactly what I meant with we are way ahead of the game.

We already had solutions in place when they launched that.

Just because you can't get your specific provider doesn't mean we are behind.

But Apple Pay is coming I believe.

Same deal with every spar I have tried it at, none of them do the NFC transactions on cards.
All of them tell me their card machines are not enabled for it, and someone told me there is a fee involved to have the service.

I have always wondered if this fee excuse for these services aren't penny wise, pound foolish. Surely your aim as a shop is to give your customer the best experience all round, and that includes payment method.

But hey, I am a "millennial", so I am not a very price sensitive consumer, its more about my experience. I would choose to support or not support a shop based on small things like that. It certainly is more appealing to me to shop somewhere if I can pay with an app or tap my card. The appeal lies in the convenience, slightly improved security... but mostly the forward thinking of the owner. I generally feel that if the owner is willing to loose a couple of bucks to make it easier for me, he has my best interest at heart and not his pocket above everything else.
