Why you should pay e-tolls

Here is my comments.

1. If everyone pays, it will ease congestion
Should have used fuel levy, then you could have built more roads and not gantries
2. It pays for the continued maintenance and upkeep of the road
See answer to point 1.
3. It makes financial sense
Does it make sense to waste money on gantries, while you already had the fuel levy?
4. It is the right thing to do
Putting in etoll was not the right thing to do, so NO, paying is not the right thing to do.
5. It eases the burden on the poor.
It worsens the burden, see answers to 1. and 3. again
6. It makes on-road services available which helps approximately 200 people on average per month.
What? You are starting to improvise on reason.
7. It has eased the automated payment option at all toll plazas.
Uhm, actually no, did you see the queue at Pumulani last Sunday?

How will it ease congestion if everyone pays?

Lmao, good one.

I just moved up to Jhb and have no intention of ever paying for e-tolls.

How will it ease congestion if everyone pays?

Exactly, that was the point, due to tolls you are effectively making the highway an exclusive "service", therefore there will be less poor people on the highways. So if everyone is paying then everyone is still using

As far as I'm concerned ALL toll roads are morally reprehensible, not just etolls. The entire concept of tolling roads is wrong. Public roads should be funded directly by the income taxes we pay, not by charging individual road users. Everybody benefits from the use of roads whether directly or indirectly. We already have a perfectly good way to finance the upkeep of roads. The imposition of tolls is sign of failure by the government. It sends out the message that the government has mismanaged public funds to such an extent that the only option available to it to fund roads is to double tax individual road users.

1. If everyone pays, it will ease congestion

It took me 2 hours to get home yesterday. Not sure how paying for something that's already there will relieve congestion...

2. It pays for the continued maintenance and upkeep of the road

That's what fuel levies and licence taxes are for.

3. It makes financial sense

No it does not. The PUBLIC will have financial implications.

4. It is the right thing to do

That's not a reason...

5. It eases the burden on the poor

How? HOW?? It makes travelling more expensive so good prices will go up etc etc.

6. It makes on-road services available which helps approximately 200 people on average per month

What services?

7. It has eased the automated payment option at all toll plazas

That's not a reason.
