Why?

Why.... can't you use more descriptive titles for your posts?

It creates intrigue and wants you to click ... like a headline in an artcile :P

Anyway - do you have any clue? I know you're fairly clued up

UMTS - STANDARD 3G (385kbps)
HSDPA - SUPER DOOPER 3G (14.4mbps)

The reason why it changes is as follows. When your modem registers on the network (no active connection yet, but it is logged on) then it will be on standard 3G (UMTS). When you click connect and the connection goes active, it will then rev up to HSDPA to enable the faster speed. This is done automatically between the end user equipment and the BTS. When the connection goes idle (no active downloading or browsing, then the tower and modem will scale your connection back down to UMTS to conserve network resources.

Hope this explains it for ya.

And to add: I have used the option dash quite a bit and have not had issues on HSDPA, so there is probably something wrong with the tower in your location.

Weird - and when it says HSDPA I seem to get slower and worse than with UMTS :/

Thanks for the replies though.

Isn't it:-

3G/UMTS - Standard 3G (384 down - 64 up)
HSPDA - Super 3G (1.8 to 3.6 down - 384 to 1.2 up)
HSUPA/HSPA+ - Super Dooper 3G (7.2 to 14.4 down - 1.2 to 5.7 up)

Something like that. HSUPA is more like a pipe dream at the moment...

I have seen my modem/Vodafone Mobile Connect report HSUPA, and when checking on MDMA I get an uplink profile of 5.76mbps. So I'm guessing the site I'm connected to has been activated for HSUPA/14.4.
