Good day,

I am not sure if this is the right forum, as it is a mixture of ADSL and Wi-Fi, but here goes.
I have a Zyxel NBG4115 which I was using with my Cell C stick, it worked great, I had a nice Wi-Fi network setup to share the internet.

My subscription expired and I decided to use the Telkom promotion, and got a new ADSL modem, it is all working great and I am sharing my internet connction in my home.

I am now wanting to expand my Wi-Fi coverage to other areas in the home, mostly to the area where my PS3 and TV are located. While the signal does get to the room, it is quite patchy. Is there a way to use the Zyxel to "bridge" the Wi-Fi to this room and then use a network cable to connect the Zyxel to the TV and PS3?
I have done some research and the 4115 does have an AccessPoint (AP) mode, but I cannot seem to connect properly.

Any ideas / comments are greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Let me see if I have this right. You're not using the Zyxel right now but want to use it to pick up the wifi signal and then route the traffic further to the tv room?

The Zyxel is intended provide internet over a wifi connection and not pick up a wifi internet connection. It's probably possible with custom firmware. Have you considered connecting the Zyxel with a network cable to the modem instead?

Thank you for the swift responses.

The answer to both queries relates to the issue that the distance of the TV and the modem is quite far and I am not really keen to drill holes to run a cable from the modem to the TV / PS3. So my thinking is using the Wi-Fi to carry the signal to the Zyxel and then wiring the TV and PS3 to the Zyxel (which would be picking up the Wi-Fi).
My PS3 currently picks up the signal fine, I just dont want to spend the money on a Wi-Fi dongle for the TV, especially if it is possible to use my existing hardware.

problem solved

ive been messing around with wireless and 720p content to my TV and its not a good idea

Thanks techead, I will definately keep this in mind for future exapnsions of my home media.
For the moment however I am still looking for a way to have my Wi-Fi signal expanded into my lounge area, the TV is a bonus, I am really looking for a way to get the PS3 connected to a wired network as opposed to the Wi-Fi network I am currently running.

Apparently the Zyxel can do it, I just (in my limited understanding and technical know-how) cannot get it to work.

Thanks again!

you can also use EoP to get your PS3 on a cable connection. Explain the layout of the house please

My modem sits in the sudy with the PC, the lounge area is approximately 15m away from the sudy. There are a few walls in the way, hence me wanting to use the second modem closer to the TV / PS3 area. I am not prepared (ok the wife will not be prepared to have holes drilled in the walls) in order to get the ethernet cable through.

I have read using a second Wi-Fi Router can help extend the Wi-Fi signal, this is what I am hoping to do, as well as connect the TV / PS3 to the second router via ethernet cable.

what you talking about is connecting two wireless routers in Bridge mode. Router 1 is in the study, and Router 2 in the lounge. Router 2 basically picks up the signal from Router 1, and "extends" that signal with a whole new area where either it wouldnt have reached before, or the signal would have been too weak. Make sense?

Why dont you buy this http://www.dlink.com.au/products/?pid=DHP-307AV Sorry I pasted the wrong link earlier. This unit comes in pairs.

Plug that in the study (with a patch cable to the adsl router) and plug the other one in the lounge connected to a small switch hidden away there. Plug all your devices into the switch.

sorted :)

Makes perfect sense, and the link you sent through looks like an awesome piece of tech!
I am however trying to use what I already have and am trying to use the Zyxel first, before I spend any more money.
the Zyxel NBG 4115 has an AP (Access Point) mode, which according to the manual (useless!!), it can be set-up to extend the wi-fi signal to other devices (which is what I want).
I am however unable to do so...which led to a very frustrating weekend :) as the online help and manual were no use to me.
Hence me posting here, as I am really lost as to the best way to do this.

ah I see you married... of course no expenditure ;)

lemme see what I can find, and what ADSL router do you have?

haha thanks.
You have me on the name of the ADSL router now.... it was the one Telkom provided when they installed the ADSL with their 3 month promotion...
I will have to wait till I get home to post it...
for the life of me I cannot think of its name

Page 55 , looks like everything is there ;)

also, maybe you might wanna update the firmware on the unit. Might get better performance etc

Does the NBG4115 support WDS?

Over the weekend I bridged a TPlink WR3220 with an old telkom Marconi router so I think you should be able to bridge the newer routers with each other.

I will check now quickly, what is WDS?

so you should be sorted then. Just follow the instructions, and take it slow. If the wife is nagging tell her to go fish :)

Haha
Yes thanks.

Sorry just saw your previous posts now.
I updated the firmware on the weekend.
The FTP site has the manual, that is what I was using, the issue there is that once I have setup the AP mode, I cannot access the router afterwards.
The 192.168.1.2 IP gives me a "404 Page not found error"...

But I guess I will look through it, the troubleshooting guide does say that the IP of my PC needs to be within the range of 192.168.1.3 - .255, I have it set to define automatically.

I will see what I can do. My thought was set it up in the study and see if I can access the network / ADSL router before trying to setup the PS3 etc.

Anyways, thanks for the help!

Ok an update.

I have managed to set the Zyxel up as an access point, however I am unable to connect it to my existing Wi-Fi connection.
As a test, I am using my PC disconnected from my home network and plugged into the Zyxel, my thoughts being if i get access to the net off the Zyxel then the Wi-Fi bridge is working.

Could someone please let me know what settings I should be looking for on the Zyxel to allow it to firstly "see" the wi-fi connection and connect to it?
I cannot see anywhere to set-up my SSID of my existing network and password for this network.

Thanks!

Ok,

I am getting the hang of the Zyxel now.
I just need to know what settings need to be put into the different routers so that the signal is shared.

Do I use the primary router's settings in the Zyxel?
As in:

IP Addresses
SSID
Passwords

or is everything unique.
Do I need to put the ISP's details into the Zyxel?

At one point the Zyxel asks me what the internet connection is, Ethernet, PPoE, PPP or Mobile 3G. Are these required?

If anyone has had experience in this regards please let me know.

Thanks!
