mm...Time for an upgrade of monitor, Its a choice between a normal 19" LCD or a LG or Samsung 19" widescreen, I use the pc for gaming, music and movies.

I know widescreen will benefit movies and stuff but which looks better for gaming and everything else cause my friend has a mecer 19" widescreen and I find that it looks almost the same size vertically as a 17" but is 19" across and then obviously the normal 19" would be measured acorss diagonally...

Normal 19" FTW ;)

The new ones look really nice...especially them samsung ones :)

Just make sure you have a fast response time for gaming....I think anything under 12ms is good enough...I got a 5ms and it works nicely :D

My problem with the 19" widescreen is the 1440x900 resolution as opposed to the 1680 x 1050 on the 20" above

That sounds like a 19'' widescreen with only analogue input...make sure the monitor has DVI input!

Oh, and any Samsung SyncMaster is welcome in my house.... :)

Well a 19" wide is a 16" (height) x 19" wide. So IMHO go for the 19" standard, as you are getting 19" in both directions :D

20.1" should be the minimum wide screen as 19" looks very weired in that aspect ratio. Besides 1680x1050 looks great on 20" and 22" :D

Widescreen. I will never go back to 4:3. It just seems more natural to have WS, your field of vision works much better horizontally than vertically. I think my experience in games and movies and overall has been increased by my WS.

Also just got myself a 20.1" LG widescreen, and am loving every moment of it immensly. I would also say that the min size for a widescreen monitor is 20", as the 19" have too little desktop space. The price difference is also not that great, so many times it is worth it to actually invest a litlle more, and get a good 20.1" monitor.

Standard 19" should be about 15" wide and 11" high, widescreen about 16" wide and 10" high. You get slightly more screen area on a standard display.

Widescreen does have advantages for general use, movies and games, but if you have a use where overall screen area is more important then stick with standard.

how much is the 20.1" LG cause I know the 19" LG widescreen is about R2000 at eurobyte

Being a laptop user, I've gotten used to widescreen. 4:3 just looks weird now.

My 2c: widescreen all the way.

Got myself the BenQ 20" Wide Screen (FP202W) - loving it! Its the same height as a normal 17", but with higher resolution than the 17/19 panels.

Games look stunning, except for a few older titles without support for wide-screen. Office-work is good as well - I can now have 2 docs open and compare side-by-side with ease.

Can now also have a desktop sidebar (e.g. google) or something open, yet still have enough screen real-estate to actually use the PC.

However, that said, widescreens only start making sense at 20" and up because of the jump in resolution. So if your choice is between 19" wide and 19" normal, I'd go for the 19" normal which has the higher resolution.

PS: Luke777, if you intend going for the BenQ, try and confirm if its the FP202W model or the FP202W V2 model. (You can see this on the back label or on the box label as well.) The V2 model uses a 6-bit dithered panel, whereas the original (V1?) used an 8-bit panel. I've seen the 6-bit in a shop, and it wasn't bad. But in my view the 8-bit is the better one to get (if you can still find one).

Got myself a Acer 19" Widescreen 5MS LCD for like R1750 ..... ultra happy with it.... will never go back ....

normal 19 widescreen sucs believe me, the best one to get is if u wanna go wide is the new packard bell, it's a 19" and 22"wide this babie rules in gaming but allas u also need a good screen card to run res' up to 2000 or more.

price at incredible conntection goes for R4000 i think.
