Widescreen - what are the benefits?

I agree with the review - I had a widescreen laptop & would never consider getting a 'letterbox' one again.
Letterbox just means a widescreen image projected on a 4:3 characterised by the black bars on the top and bottom.

ermmm...no kind sir. either the screens have the same physical real estate, in which case they weigh the same, or they have different physical real estate, in which case they weigh different. a simple calculation with pythagorus theorem tells me the widescreen lcd has a smaller viewable area. the only increase in perceived real estate is due to the higher pixel count, which you can get easily enough in 4:3 by opting for a higher res 15" panel.
i feel the main benefit in having a widescreen lcd is
1) our eyes see widescreen, so it feels more natural
2) a notebook formfactor tries to stick to the size and shape of an A4 piece of paper. which is widescreen, so you can make better use of the space available as maximum screensize=chassis size
3) sometimes having stuff side by side without having to scroll is a boon...

I don't really care about widescreen or traditional 4:3 ratio. What I want to see is HIGH resolutions!!
My old Acer SXGA screen (1450x1050) easily kicks any new WXGA screen's ass. It is only the WSXGA screens that beat me!

have the site myadsl site/news admins got nothing better to put up, I visit myadsl everyday hopeing to hear some good news about adsl in our country not read about laptop manufactures being right about wide screens on laptops, pathetic.
come on news admins give us some real news please.

Right, there's no way the screen can have the same area, but result in a smaller laptop. Widescreen laptops give up vertical resolution in exchange for horizontal. And that has an effect on the overall shape of the laptop. And no they very often will not fit into the same bags because they're too long.
Widescreen laptops are usually 16:10 where the traditional screens were 4:3. A4 is neither. Although when you exclude the area used by side toolbars 4:3 tablet PCs provide a screen area that closely matches the shape of A4 paper.

yes fine, but the url for the site notes that the site is about broadband, so on the front page, there should only be broad band/telkom related articles, like the article about the new ipod, nothing to do with broad band.
Here's the front page - http://www.mybroadband.co.za/nephp/? - you should be able to figure out what-is-what by the title and synopsis.
So the site is no longer a purist broadband site, it has benefited massively from the additional content.
