Wifi Access points

Yea we live in quiet an old house, most of our walls are double depth. the 9DbI antennas that are on the asus struggle going through 2 of them.

It's a brilliant yet pricey product.

One of the Ubiquiti trainers informed me that they're not really designed for homes like ours (made of brick and mortar) but rather for Mericans who use wood and dry wall.

Yeah that’s a good point but at the same time the way our roof structures work in most cases a lot of that isn’t a problem.

Unifi’s are a bit more complex to install and more work but ultimately need the product to cater for the individual need.

I have not actually seen the Amplifi sold locally yet but someone I know brought a kit back from the UK and is very happy with it in a three story house.

Even installed it himself as a not so super geek. Haven’t gone to check it out yet.

I really think they've come along way...
Their mobile app makes it super simple to setup- anyone could honestly do it.

Oh I see iStore actually stocks it and claims to have stock.

But almost double the price it should cost.

Does the App work with the UniFi's as well now? Lekker. So no more need for the controller and all that?

Go see my post of page 1 of this thread, it's post #6

I have mine setup using Amazon Web Services and have my controller running in the cloud- it's amazing but you could use the app instead of a controller for a local instance.

If you want help setting up the cloud controller - just shout :)

Oh no I know all about cloud controller and don't need help as I've installed plenty of these.

Just been a while so didn't realise there even was an App that could take over.

Well now you do... I'll send the invoice :D

It is possible to set them up on a VLAN and manage remotely
IF you use a proper management VLAN that is local only and use SSL
The VLAN can of course be "distributed"

Please let me know when you find such a thing ...... :)

They are on management vlan, but usually after a couple years (at least many of the 1 series) stops responding to GUI and Telnet requests. They still work, but cant accessible to reboot.

Always had to get the office admin lady to find the right port to unplug and reboot.

TELNET ... ?
That's a dismissal offence ...;):)

Clear Text

What's wrong with telnet?
It makes most of the communications world go round.
In CLEAR TEXT
The real problem is that Telnet will send all your authentication details (username and password) is clear text, this means anyone with a packet sniff will EASILY be able to see your username and password. Microsoft disabled Telnet by default so that an everyday user will not stumble on to the Telnet feature. There is no security risk in installing Telnet, as it is just used to initiate a remote connection.

Not the Lite.

But the Long Range should do the job.

The whole point of these though is to have a few and not just one. That's what sets them apart from regular consumer stuff.

I just installed the AC LR. The range is horrible. On par with my 10 year old WRT54G...

5 GHZ is almost unusable. Even with automatic bandsteering on, my phones (S7 and S8) rarely connect to the 5Ghz radio. In my office (about 8 meters, two walls) there is virtually no signal. Tried numerous channel and power settings.

Any recommendations on an other AP that can be powered by POE.

Sounds very strange.

A few things...

Have you done an RF scan in the controller?

Also, have you tried positioning the unit in the most central location?

5ghz is not meant for penetration.

How does 2.4ghz perform?

Did a scan. Channels clean.

2.4 GHZ is better but still not great.

These are probably better suited for multiple AP with clear LOS. Outside of the house (garden, ~15m from AP) there is virtually no signal. 2 walls in between.

Did you install it in the ceiling or against a wall?
