WiFi and how to control it ?

Guys please help here? I have an ADSL connection with up to 4Mbs line speed. I connect using Wifi on my laptop and so does my sister on her laptop. The thing is that while I am streaming a 720P movie and my nephew decides to use the Wifi on my sister's laptop, i experience bad bufferring. I get him to select 240P quality on what he is viewing and i can continue to view my movie while streaming. Is there a way I can control using my modem or use CMD to put in certain parameters for the said PC that is causing me to loose quality? Or should I use a cable directly from my router to avoid the above?

What are the pros and cons allowing other users using my Wifi??

Your best bet would be to use QOS of some description and prioritise your traffic over any other traffic on the network.

Its a very difficult situation to just diagnose easily. I'm on Telkom's LTE and get around 33mbps down. With that, some devices in my home can stream perfectly yet my phone every single time buffers and stutters.

Some Wi-Fi routers have a quality of service option, and can prioritize media over other things but i've found this to be less than ideal in "home/office" based products. Its a feature implemented from high-end enterprise-level routers/firewalls and i dont think most of the small devices have the CPU power to cope with doing it fully.

I know ASUS ones can also split bandwidth per device and give some devices or protocols priority but again on a mickey-mouse CPU i'm skeptical as to how reliable it would be.

You might just find the 4mbps, plus throttling on the DSLam plus caching on your ISP's side is just not going to deliver a consistent enough experience for multi-device video streaming.

A decent TP link router, QoS never works.

TP link you can limit individual clients if im not mistaken.

It would be cool to be able to set time parameters for certain users using my Wifi or to even shut them down - this I believe is possible using CMD.

You would be able to accomplish that using a PFsense box.

All you would need it an old machine with 2 NICs...

I don't really want to go and purchase any additional hardware, although I do want my nephew and sister to access the internet using my WiFi without me loosing any quality while I am streaming.

Others pointed correctly about QoS. Other factor need to be considered. If you have one device using older WiFi standard, it will degrade the entire network to the old standard. Check if all devices comply to at least 802.11n. One older 802.11b/g device will affect your 720p streaming.

Other things comes to my mind. If both your WiFi access point and streaming device support 5GHz range, put them together and force other devices to connect 2.4GHz.

Can be done using a TP Link Router with no additional hardware required.
