I'm looking for a device that can set different logins for staff on a WiFi network and then assign each of them a cap. I've heard of a mirotik but there are various models and I'm not sure which one will suit my needs.

At my workplace we have an LTE modem while waiting for our fixed line to be installed and we can't give unrestricted access to all staff.

I would still need such a device after we move to a fixed line since staff will abuse uncapped WiFi access. Any suggestions? We currently have a B315 and as far as I know that can't be done on the modem itself

Try a ubiquity UniFi Access Point- then enable a guest hotspot with vouchers. Create a voucher for each user and when that finishes, they lose access and need to ask for another voucher. We've run this for clients using LTE before, works like a charm.

Mikrotik works well if you want to limit the users' data rates. Not so much for limiting the amount of data. Unifi with vouchers on a software controller would work best for that.

Why would they abuse the wifi access? Make them sign an agreement that all personal downloads need to be done during lunch breaks and block all illegal content. Anybode who breaks the rule gets moered.

Any specific model I should look for?

There will be no way to monitor who downloads what. As it is, they use the office PC to watch YouTube and all the staff claim it wasn't them. We are allowed use our phones at work and the maintenance staff talk on their own cellphones for hours in the day. If I throw unrestricted WiFi at them they will abuse it day and night.

Is the LTE account uncapped therefore you need data rate limits, or you have a cap?

Basically one starts off on one profile, and if data limit reached, moved to a slower profile, think it will allow for multiple profiles. That way you can allow for those that just occasionally use a bit of data, but stop constant abuse on a daily time-frame. Basic web browsing should still work when on a slow profile and it would encourage lower bandwidth streaming/YouTube will set lower as less bandwidth.

unifi ap is easy as chips. You can throttle the bandwidth usage. So if you have users that are bandwidth hogs just throttle them down to say a 56Kbps connection. They will eventually give up :D

OP mentions LTE currently, so data as a general needs to be limited...

You can use any MikroTik for this. The "cAP Gi-5acD2nD " work quite well for me. With the Captive portal you could limit their speed and CAP, if you want to. I simply limit staff cellphones and tablets to 1Mb to avoid updates slowing down the network.

UniFi AC lite or long range, or even the mesh AP. Well priced APs with great performance and easy to install.

You can pick these up in a few places. Drop me a DM or email me. I can arrange one and have it shipped to you. You can run the controller on a local PC. Or we run a cloud controller that you can use to manage it. Will send it to you configured.

Just my 2cents, never ever rate limit users over wifi, limit the CAP. Rate limiting is counter intuitive on wifi and causes headaches for other users as well. Airtime is a critical resource in the wifi world, get the users as much bandwidth as they need and they can get off quicker allowing other users more airtime.
