Wifi for a large house

Little bit pissed off with Ubiquiti/Scoop at the moment.

My UDM just died magically the other night and upon closer inspection there was the tell tale smell of something electrical having died.

I always thought the built-in power supply without an earth seemed like a bad idea since I got it and was proper right quickly.

Sent it back to Scoop who almost immediately declared this unit died from an electric overload and therefore won’t be covered by warranty. This unit of course lives in my server rack behind a UPS along with lots of other kit.

It died all by itself and if electric overload is a problem then it’s a piece of ****. The attitude regarding warranty I hope is a piss poor one from Scoop so I guess I’ll continue the fight on Monday and take it up with Ubiquiti directly I guess.

If this is their own stance then it’s left a very poor taste in my mouth for a device that costs R6500+.

I've never liked Scoop TBH, always buy from TNW.

Well the last bunch of UDM Pro’s and Access Starter Kits we did buy from someone else because Scoop didn’t have stock or priced too high so I may very well reach out to them about doing an RMA even though we didn’t buy it there.

Next week’s problem.

Just so unnecessary. I mean I actually can’t believe someone has rejected a warranty based on an electrical issue supposedly on the user side causing the problem….as if there is any way to even prove that.

All electronic distributors have the same policy on surge, and brown outs. Its pretty hard to say when its the device thats faulty or the erratic supply in SA. Unless you see a trend in returns on a certain product.

Open a ticket with Ubiquti directly as they will probably allow a replacement. Reason being is they dont really know how bad our supply is. Not sure if they would do this but perhaps you can even get a replacement shipped direct from the EU store as nobody has stock locally. Alternatively you just get your money back and buy something with an external power supply

I've had an issue with the switch 8 lite PSU failing due to a surge, scoop had no replacements locally, and ubiquiti USA wanted the faulty unit to be sent to them first after which they were willing to send a replacement.

Ended up buying a replacement from a digitech reseller. 54v not available locally.
Lucky it was external.

Yeah it’s a bit of a bullshit scapegoat but like I said this unit has been on a UPS it’s entire life and nothing else has a problem so it’s purely the unit that died.

I need another one or a UDM Pro as this is a testing unit that runs the beta firmwares ahead of our commercially installed ones so that I can test UID on it before commercial rollout.

Who is your other supplier ?

Open a ticket with Ubiquiti and state that. Like skyw4lk3r said they can ask you to send them the item, but they can just as easily tell the disty to replace, or refund if there is no stock.

Remember the manufacturer holds the warranty and the disty facilitates. The cost is borne by the manufacturer when the product is replaced and all the disty loses is their profit from the sale. So its in the distys best interest to assist you as a client, and they just follow the rules. If you disagree with something, simply speak to the manufacturer who ultimately holds the power.

Oh for sure, I know exactly how it works, it was just a late Thursday afternoon before a long weekend thing so I just left it then.

What really annoyed me was their attitude of “you have 30 days to collect it or we’ll scrap it” attitude on top of their diagnosis.

Yeah, same thing happened to me but the UDM has other problems besides it electrical ones.

Well Scoop's CTO came back to me right after I logged the RMA with Ubiquiti but it was a little bit too fast on top of that so I'll write it off as them coming to the party before Ubiquiti forced them to.

They of course don't have stock, so now we wait.

Oh so they came back offering ti replace it? After having told you less than 5 days ago that it was your fault? Shady AF!!!!

Yeah I sent a strongly worded email on Thursday and then by an hour ago I had heard nothing I decided to log an RMA with Ubiquiti directly.

Literally within the same minute I got the emails from Ubiquiti to say I had logged it their CTO responded saying they are coming to the party with a refund for the lack of stock or upgrading to a UDM Pro which should land in October.

So I doubt the Ubiquiti RMA was the reason and it does seem they came to the conclusion of their own accord which is a good thing.

Credit where it is due for turning it around after I called it out once and not having to fight about it. Everyone remaining reasonable all round.

The Unifi APs are decent but the SNMP support for it stinks. You need to rely totally on its own controller that doesn't have 3rd party integration.

What kind of third party integration are you looking for out of interest? SNMP is an open standard after all that should plug into anything.

What's the use case really though? I ask because I setup SNMP for them into Zabbix but even having done it I kind of question what the usefulness of it really is to me.

Well you can check the uptime in an easy manner using SNMP. Would like the wireless info.
The mib UBNT uses is the simple sitting on the dock of the bay one with squat wireless extensions. Half baked and useless coding and development. Can only get the ethernet interface info!
