Hi guys,

Living in a rural area, got satellite internet through YahClick, and have a wifi set up involving multiple routers, as the internet is used in our office and 2 other homes... Basically modem connected to one router in office, and other 2 connected by cable in each house, DHCP only enabled on router in office... Been working fine for a while, but lately, seemingly randomly the wifi at each house will lose connection to internet, then eventually bomb out totally... Resetting the routers in the houses does nothing for the problem, however simply walking into range of the router in office allows me to connect, then I can connect fine again to other routers... Oh ja, all routers have the exact same settings minus the wifinames and passphrases... Also all the cables have been checked for breakages and the sort...

Any help PLEASE

What do you mean that they lose connection to the internet ? Need more information. Is the signal strength still fine? Have you tried to do a continuous ping to the default gateway and check any failures? Why don't you have the wifi name/settings the same as the office? How far apart are they? What about interference? Need more info.

Agreed re @Bionic on question why differences with WIFi name and passphrase (should be the same).
The issue in my opinion is probably related to either the ethernet cable (length and/or impedance from running parallel, for example with other electrical cables), or the network IP settings: both routers should be using fixed IPs; (IPs which btw should not be provisioned for DHCP i.e. to avoid conflicts)
Another thing to look for would be other equipment that is broadcasting at 2GHz or 5GHz, for example: TV wireless transmission units that broadcast TV signals wirelessly are well known to interfere with WIFI.

More than that you'd need to provide some more details (router type, pings, ip settings, ethernet cable length, likelihood for electrical impedance, ...)

One more thing; do you possibly have inline lightning protection modules on the ethernet cable: these are fairly notorious for their intermittent failures (will be confirmed by a ping + you can temporarily remove them)

How and when do I do ping?? Signal strength still shows fine, still shows connected, just no internet access, can still do other functions such as use phone remote for xbmc and such over wifi, and play files from other PCs over smb.. Houses roughly 70m each side of office, had problems earlier with signals dropping and what not, but played around with channel settings, and got to something that worked... Wifi from office maybe reaches a meter or 2 into each house but not to where other routers are situated... Reason for different network names, is that we have people we have people who work for us who stay within range of house routers but not office, who use the office wifi for work, and we need to keep them off wifi after hours as it is a capped service...

The system with has been working for plus minus 6 months up until lately, DHCP only enabled on main router in office, routers have static Ips

Only other system on a similar frequency is 2.4Ghz remote for RC car, not being used at time when problems occur

And as I say, if I walk into range of main router when giving trouble at homes, device connects fine, then if walk back to home, problem seems to have disappeared without rebooting or changing anything

I take it the IP used for the routers have been excluded from the DHCP address pool?

You could still be hanging onto the WIFi signal from the other building.

If you can I would suggest connecting to the 2nd router with an Ethernet cable + disabling WIFi. Check the. If that works ok;
if NO then the problem is router and / or ethernet cable bound
If YES then the problem is WIFi related. On the WIFi side both routers when connected via an ethernet cable should always share exactly the same settings except for the own IP address. Secondly make sure you are not using any WIFI extending features (router feature to connect two wifi router via WIFI as opposed to physical cable)

Click start, then run, type cmd .type ipconfig.then confirm if your default dns server is the office ip.then on same command screen, type ping leave space and then ip address of office with -t for a continuous ping eg. Ping 192.168.1.254 -t .If there are no failures then check for any wireless inteferences.download Insidder on your mobile.connect to each ap and check for overlapping.

Will do, and get back to you if problem persists

Thanks ALOT!!! (no sarcasm) Followed all your tips, found there was a slight overlap of channels, changed channels on each router, so no overlapping, thanks for the help, let's hope it helps!!!

I also find that a challenge. I generally click on my name on the top right and then click on my last posts below.
