Wifi in a cellphone. What for?

I know I'm a bit outdated on this, but lately I see a lot of phone with Wifi. What is the uses for that in a phone? Can I connect to a wifi modem maybe, to use that internet connection?
 
yep, connect to a wireless hotspot or wireless router/access point instead of using your phone's 3G which costs moola :)

I mostly use mine for a bit of web browsing in bed or Skype using Fring.
 
It's meant more for corporates that can provide a network either for browsing but I think more for keeping your phone synced with outlook etc. Otherwise in countries with public access points you can use it for VoIP, browsing, etc cheaper than cellphone network (unless you have an "unlimited" plan)
 
Sometimes it's also a real hassle to pull out your laptop (if you have one) and connect to a WiFi hotspot to look up something quickly. The phone is there, on and ready for use. I actually use my phone's WiFi more than I use packet-switched data connections. It's just way cheaper.
 
Yeah the lack of PPPoE rules it out for my home use. I'm sure some corporates would make use of it within the office as well. I've pretty much never used it on my phone, it occasionally came in use for testing.

Another neat trick is to use your phone as an access point. You can install software that will connect using your 3g and then act as an AP for your laptop etc.
 
I have never owned a phone with wifi but my next phone will hopefully have it. Would save oodles on data charges!
