Ok, so i am moving into a new house in about 2months time. Currently im on a 3g connection for my internet, but when i move i want to get ADSL installed. My one friend has ADSL with a wifi enabled router and is staying about 400m from my house. Will i be able to pick up his wireless and connect via his line ? And if 400m is to far, is there a way to increase that distance ?

does he have an ECNS License to provide you with Wifi internet?

i want to say no .... but i would quess if i do say no, you are just gonna tell me its illegal and wont tell me if it works, so no comment ? :erm:

400m is too far, you could probably get some reception at 80m, but after 80m it's impossible

get onto the jawug site and take a look at what they use to transmit data around, note that they do not use their equipment to sell commercial services

i wont say its not legal but icasa will, and no the modem are to weak for 400m u will need to look at something like 2 nanostations and put up an wireless network, hope the house are line of sight.

The only way to try is to take your laptop there and see if you can pick up his wifi connection. Although with a standard wifi-router your signal is unlikely to be too strong at that distance.

Distance of 400m is too far for normal Wireless G range on the standard omni antenna.

Cost of new wireless kit such as Antenna and Bridged Access Points may be too much as opposed to having your own ADSL.

Nothing wrong with a private Wireless LAN between yourselves as long as you do not re-sell Internet Access across it.

Share whatever data you want, just don't talk about it man ;)

Two Nanostations linked with line of sight between houses would do the job, you just need to weigh the pros and cons in terms of costs.

If you are willing to each invest in a CPE then you will easily be able to connect. My Acconet CPE cost me R1500 about 3 years ago and I was connecting to a WISP about 5 KM away.

So that will be a cost of R3000. Your buddy will have to connect his CPE to his wireless router in repeater mode. You will connect yours to your ethernet card in client mode.

2 nanostations will be like R1500 than you just run it like an normal network it would be the easy way than getting CPE
