Hope there is someone here that can help. My desktop keeps disconnecting and automatically connects to the wifi router.

Current setup: Windows 10 Build 1809, all updates installed and the wifi dongle that I'm currently using is an
ASUS USB-AC54 USB Wireless adapter. Desktop is the only device that keeps on disconnecting, so I know the problem must be there somewhere.

Steps taken so far:
1. Formatted hard drive in case drivers got corrupted (a bit extreme, but it was needed in any case)
2. Installed the newest Windows 10 build and all drivers.
3. Tried some cmd commands that I found in the forums here.

Been having the problem with the clean install without anything else installed, so it's either Windows or Chrome.
Dongle is a bit more than a year old, which I had to get a new one since the old one was causing issues with my screen (a really weird problem: the old one caused the screen to go all snowflakey).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

try a wired connection

Wired works, but SO complains that it is too much effort to unplug and plug in when he wants to play online games with our ADSL. Apparently he always has bad lag unless the PC's Internet connection is disabled.

Edith also prefer to not have it plugged in - lost a mobo like that to lightning. This is already modem #8 or 9.

Have you tried it in another pc? Sounds like it's damaged.

What about different usb ports..? Current one you are using may not be supplying power properly or not enough of it..

Does the same dongle work fine at other locations (family/friends house) or (other PC's at same location) ?
Got some friends coming over tomorrow and have asked them to bring their laptop with to test.

So far so good in another USB port. Just weird that the port it was in 'stopped' providing enough power.

It's more common than you might think.. at a previous company, we had to provide most staff with laptops a usb cable with two usb plugs for their 3g dongles after a year or so because of usb power issues..

Err, yea if the cable isn't plugged in/enabled i'm pretty sure he would lag endlessly :p If he has lag on a wired connection then you have a bigger issue not specific to the wireless

He plays on the Xbox via the WiFi. Got the 5G signal dedicated to the Xbox just for gaming purposes.

Seems to have been the power supply to the one USB port. Thank you guys for the help. It always feels like there is something you forget when doing trouble shooting.

Verify power issue using self-powered USB hub. It could be also poor socket quality, but I agree, power issues are very frequent. Motherboard USB ports have overload protection using self-resettable fuses. Frequently these protection devices fail and start triggering on much lower current levels. Also check other USB ports affected, one protector can serve more than one USB port. If your motherboard is still under warranty, it is qualifying for replacement.

Check that you do not have any more powerful wi-fi signals in your neighbourhood, especially ones using the same channel as you

I have helped numerous B&Bs and AirBnB homes with wi-fi issues and this is 90% of the problem

The by far easiest way to solve it to install a Ubquiti Long Range access point. The problem simply goes away. They cost between R1200 and R1600 and are easy to install

Check that you do not have any more powerful wi-fi signals....

We live in a complex with a bunch of cheapskates. You can only pick up the other people's (2 other units) WiFi when you walk past their houses, so I know they are not a problem.

Verify power issue....

Have tested the dongle on our friend's laptop today, and no issues. This is why I have now concluded that the problem must be the ports. Will definitely test the rest of the ports, just saw that I still have about a year left on the warranty :)

Check the adapter power properties common problem from win 7 upwards
Adapter Properties > Configure > Power Management > Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

Make sure you un-tick the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box

Should solve your problem
