Hi guys

Was just hoping someone could just assist with some info about routers and suggestions ofr one with a good wifi range.

My neighbour used to live in the apartment next door to me, and we were splitting the ADSL bill, the basic wifi modem provided was capable of transmitting the connection between flats, currently have a 10mb line, but splitting the costs - we're mostly together in each others places and use the net mostly for netflix and youtube, but i also play online.

However, they have moved down the hall, approximately four rooms between us now (i live in *01, they in *05). The range from the standard router reaches the enterance to *04. I cant verify if the signal works inside either of those flats. i was just wondering if there are any suggestions to getting a router that would be be able to reach their place?

We are both only going to be in these flats for this year, and might move into a house next year, so i suggested we rather just go halfsies on a better router rather than each getting a separate line, with the hope that the router bought will be cheaper than a 11month subscription?

will appreciate any suggestions
have tried googling routers - however im not able to really find out much information about the range of routers

Get a TP-LINK WA5210g access point or something similar.

Plug it into the existing router, and your WiFi signal should be extended.

I'm sure you will get lots of suggestions, the TP link AP works for me, it's relatively cheap, and easy to configure.

Distance seems to be a problem and you guys are not on the same db so can't even suggest ethernet over powerline....Your best bet is to run an ethernet cable between the two flats or if you want another option mount an external wi-fi ap outside his flat window that's closest to you....Doing this indoors means the other two flats walls will block most of the wifi signal unfortunately.

Took a special from takealot for the ASUS N14U router with range extender. Was R 1600. Brought down to R 1049. Bought it for the Ai Cloud feature and I needed the range extender. Works quite well in my place.

I managed to extend an old Wi-fi router's range to a block from my house using customized firmware.

Thing is, although a phone can receive the signal, it's own Wifi signal is not strong enough to transmit far enough for the router to receive it.

802.11n has better range and throughput, rather use that if at all.
@OP, what's the distance, number/thickness of walls? You can always take the new router with.

This will do the trick.

I use this personally and at a few clients. One the best ranges I have seen.

It even has a "boost" button which send additional power to the wifi card to increase the range.

Just some feedback incase anyone was wondering -
I ended up buying the tenda router yesterday - great service from scoop - i ordered it yesterday and it was delivered this afternoon.
i tried to setup the network, but unfortunately there are too many walls it seems - i first tried with it in the closet room to theirs and then later tried it with it in their flat and with my router in the closest spot all of the time with the boost option turned on.
Was planning on using it as my main router if the project failed, however i realised it doesnt connect directly to adsl, only has ethernet ports. Ive now just disabled wifi on the telkom modem, and using the tenda one through wan.
But none the less I am impressed with the tendas range, it time to time had weak enough signal to be visible.
