hi, I just got a 20 down 10 up line . On the computer which is on a lan cable the Mybroadband speedtest is about 20 down and 10 up, but on wifi the speed is 4 down and 1 up. The fiber router is a Huawei otn and can handle 5 or 2.4 wifi. Why is the wifi speed so slow. How do I get it faster please.

How far are you from the router and through how many walls and slabs must the signal go? A wall is a speed bump

Also was this wifi speedtest done on 1.4 or 5 ghz? 5ghz hates walls ab F will degrade in speed really quickly. 2.4ghz is better at range but will always be slower and more congested

Typically a better router or an additional access point will help with slow WiFi

5 meters

There are numerous android apps (if you are not on apple anyway) that will list all surrounding Wifi signals as well as the channels they run on. You can determine from there the best channel to use.

Otherwise, it's probably just better getting a better router or dedicated AP if your router only does 2.4Ghz. Could also be that your router does 5Ghz but device doesn't. I suspect it's the former rather than the latter.

Really old devices did 54Mbps or something at best so....

Sitting 3 meters from router, my cellphone shows fast, brand new laptop one Meg down only, router on ch 11. Wifi signal strong.

What model router is it?

Typically OTNs don't have WIFI but are a demarcation for handoff to a CPE.
Post pics of the OTN or router and how you have it positioned.

The airwaves are dirty
I try and hardwire via ethernet as much as possible.
I know you cant with your phones and such, but at least plug in your RJ45 cable if you can for your laptop, computer, smart TV etc

That's a wifi enabled ONT which only supports 2.4Ghz. Wifi speed tests should max out the line but I've seen them max at 4 down through normal use. What's the Tenda used for?
This one got 2.4 and 5. The tenda was for the adsl which is still on, but I switch it of to make sure it was not interfering with the wifi. My cellphone does 20 down, 10 up according to myBB. Laptop still slow according to myBB, and I can see it. And this is why I am around here, to get some help.

Are you getting those speeds on the 2.4 or 5 ghz band?

Assuming your router has no issues (and firmware up to date), no nearby devices with interference and your cables are sound (try different cables, ideally cat 5e or Cat6) from ONT to Router. Perhaps try the following one at a time and note the speed test after each item (i usually use 2 different speed test checks) till you fault find.

1. Place your antenna upwards or horizonal
2. Reboot router.
3. Disconnect all other devices connecting to your wifi and only connect 1 device to it (kill all background programs). If this sorts it out, its likely you have something in the background eating up your bandwidth.
4. Try changing the wifi channel (try 1, 6 and 11).

This ONT and router is one. 2.4 . I will play.
