Wild West ~ If We Armed Everyone?

In the Namibian desert...
Back in the day when the West of America was being tamed, the area was lawless, where bad folk roamed, raping, thieving , rustling and a bean eating.....

To help counter this, most folk carried guns..... Gun toting god fearing folk were all given a chance to return fire...

On lap 33 of my swim this morning, I got to thinking...

What would happen if everyone in SA was armed?

I know accidents would happen and homicides would increase.....but surely the criminal element would no longer hold the advantage?

If they were going to Hijack a car for example, surely they would think twice, knowing that the owner of that car was armed? Or breaking into house, knowing the person living there would be shooting back at you..... even in the case where guns are stolen, there would no longer be an advantage....

I don't condone guns, but it was a thought...

I wonder what the crime rate is in Israel where there are a lot of armed folk around?

Uhm. Just look at the good old USA. Just about everyone has a gun. Doesnt seem to help much
 
Traffic would take on a new dimension of risk as you get caught in the cross-fire between hijackers, smash-and-grabbers, road-ragers, window-washers, taxi-drivers, and soccer moms.
 
I think the pool water has affected your reasoning.

Crime would actually increase and become more brutal as these guys would now target you specifically for your weapon - would kill you on sight for it.

The folk in Israel carry guns to protect themselves against Hamas who can't get access anyway.
Here, criminals walk among us.

US are at number 3 highest murder rate in the world overall. Take away the 3 states with the most severe gun requirements like Orlando and the US drops to the bottom of the list.
All the latest gun crimes over there have been committed in a "safe zone / Libtart zone".

There is a inverse relation to arming citizens and crime. Take Australia. After taking away most of their rights to defend themselves, Australia has seen an unprecedented upsurge in crime, robberies, rapes etc.

Their neighbours, NZ, have full rights to defend themselves - they have the lowest crime ever.
In every Swiss home is a fully automatic rifle given to the them by their army after service.
How many robberies, murders, rapes you think...ja...you would be right - nothing, nada.

Another country that took away their citizen's right to defend themselves also comes to mind - Germany 1933....

Although shooting is my sport and have represent SA internationally, I have used weapons to defend my life in South Africa 3 different times, but my friends, when your government tells you you cannot have a gun, that's when you'll need a gun.

Please educate yourself about guns and their history and then arm yourself - it is your DUTY to protect your loved ones.

Nope....doesnt make a defence in the US right now. Theives are gonna theive.

There was this video of this one guy who basically owned 20% of all firearms in the US.
 
Short term it would increase the slaughtering of good people, but in time the good will use the means and overcome the bad people so to speak.

Essentially there is more good than bad in this country, but all good won't suddenly use the means right away.

Hence a purge, the bad has a upper hand.

I am all for an armed citizenry and the right to defend ones home , loved ones and friends through the use of firearms.

A study of felons done in the U.S. showed the following :

88% of the criminals surveyed by Wright and Rossi agreed with the statement that, “A criminal who wants a handgun is going to get one.”

81% of interviewees agreed that a “smart criminal” will try to determine if a potential victim is armed.

74% indicated that burglars avoided occupied dwellings, because of fear of being shot.

57% said that most criminals feared armed citizens more than the police.

40% of the felons said that they had been deterred from committing a particular crime, because they believed that the potential victim was armed.

57% of the felons who had used guns themselves said that they had encountered potential victims who were armed.

34% of the criminal respondents said that they had been scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed citizen.

The bolded bit is the rub -
Police react to and investigate criminal activity after the fact in almost all cases. The victim on the other hand, if armed has the means and knowledge to end the criminal act there and then.

Quite simply , well trained ,armed citizens = lower crime.
 
I'm pro gun. Point!

However, there are a large number (majority) of gun owners that are untrained and unskilled in using their firearms. These people buy pistols/revolvers based on a facebook warrior/family member/ friends advice. After the purchase and lisence approval the gun seldom to never sees a gun range/ cleaning rod or training facility.

No one is expecting you to be a Jerry Miculek, but the key to using your FA for survival lies in knowing how to use it under a stress situation.
 
I support it. On the agreement/consensus that certification of an acceptable standard is adhered to - Which I will leave to the more experienced to decide/discuss.

Personally though I'd feel very awkward carrying a firearm. Not sure why. I've thought about it and at one stage was keen. Perhaps if I had a family/dependents to look after though I'd reconsider. Not only for their personal safety but to increase my own safety for their sake.

No matter how many firearms you own, you can only shoot one at a time :p (Queue the funny dual carrying AR gifs) So I don't see any sort of "escalation" occurring. If a criminal has a firearm it is on even terms if his targets also carry. If he doesn't he is fkin brave to jump you to try get yours. Fear of consequence is what keeps people in check, not goody feelings. The bad guys may not have those feelings or not had reason to think it further.

Of course, license to carry an RPG warrants some concern as to the extent of "self defense" required :D

On another note, not sure how I'd feel the day I were to ever effectively use a firearm. I fear those consequences on me more than anything. Dealing with killing a person that is - even if forced into that situation. Then again it could happen without a firearm too. Hit or maim or stab or club them the wrong way in self defense is the same I suppose.

Another issue is a criminal probably wouldn't hesitate to shoot in public (i.e. in traffic during hijack or something or at one of these mall shootouts) whereas I'd be too concerned hitting an innocent person. HTF to avoid that? I assume the usual training covers that... i.e. comply, get out asap, then if necessary shoot.

Not a good idea. There would be no taxi drivers left in my neck of the woods and the car of the azzhole who keeps playing music so loud it rattles our windows whenever he drives past would be riddled with bullets.

Crap. Everybody in Switzerland are about armed. You get to keep your kit from military service and your gun. No problems there. But then, this is Africa. The mentality...too many criminals would be shot and killed. aND THE "human" rights lot will catch a fit.
 
3 words. Service Delivery Protests.

Can you imagine how bloody and violent they'll become. As it is unions and community mobs are uncontrollable, imagine if every single one of these protestors were armed. We'd have a civil war in no time.
