i was just wondering if i will be able to use the promo on 2G coverage because our doesnt have 3G coverage. . . and plz do explain why is it that you need 3G and why cant you use 2G? . . . wont your internet just be slower? thx :-P soz for the hassle

You can use 2G or 3G, as long it is 8ta network. Buy R1 for SIM card, call centre to convert it to non-roaming, then test your coverage and find out you like 2G or 3G, whatever... Browsing www.8ta.com is free, you don't need to recharge any cent. For real speed testing buy bundle.

Occasionally I connect to an EDGE only tower on 8ta, so this is definitely a possibility - just painfully slow.

GPRS (2G) is going to give you about 50kbps download speed, EDGE around 150kbps.

yes...

Yes if you are in their range it will work... just slow obviously

You are missing the point, EDGE is a superset to GPRS and can function on any network with GPRS deployed on it so an EDGE only tower would indicate the possibility of a 2G only connection.

Uhm, no. A GPRS tower isn't automatically EDGE enabled. And how is this missing the point - I'm trying to quantify how slow the connection speed will be if he chooses to go this route.

No, but an EDGE tower (as per my post on 8ta sometimes pushing you to an EDGE only tower) is GPRS enabled and can be used for only 2G, if you so wish. Namely, if you can use EDGE only, you can use GPRS only. My concern wasn't for the speed, but the possibility to doing so.

I don't think it's possible. If a device is EDGE enabled and connected to an EDGE enabled tower, it will automatically connect at EDGE protocols. Besides, why would you want to?

Yes it is possible, all EDGE towers are GPRS towers. Switch your phone to 2G and it'll work fine. You switch to 2G to save on battery life.

thx for the reply's :-P and soz i thought edge was 2G . . . yip the crap thing about our town is we are only edge covered. . . oh another question theres a town 15 km away from us and they have 3G coverage and hsdpa except for 8ta 3G. . . but the thing i dont understand we are closer to capetown then they are. . . wouldnt the 3G signal or frequency band travel through our tower. . . probally a stupid question. . .

These towers usually run on a cable backbone, so there is not necessarily a signal on your tower.
